New Vice Chancellor appointed to Peradeniya University

Colombo, July 19 (Daily Mirror)- President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed Professor W. M. T. Madhujith to the post of Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya with effect from August 01, 2024, Presidetial Media Division (PMD) said.

He was appointed in terms of Section 34(1)(a) of the Universities Act for a period of three (03) years.

I agree with you. This looks a politically motivated one . All old profs are sidelined. Shame of these people to get post by back door. UP has been very good in respecting seniors and following it's academic tradition and protocols to appoint seniors but now politics changed all. NPP will put this right soon

What fo you know about seniority and leadership capability? There could be very senior professor but not good in leadership. There are many organisations where capable persons are appointed over senior people . It is the outdated colonial mentality to expect promotion based on time spent on the job rather than the real capability of that person. Look at Google , a big US tech company, appointing Sunder Pacchai, a South Asian , over very senior big white guys. Look at the progress he made in Google since the day he became CEO.

A lot of vice chancellors have become political appointees. Moratuwa university until recently had VCs who were highly respected. Current Moratuwa vice chancellor has no shame getting involved in direct political activities. He was recently seen in the opening of the new coordinating center for the election campaign. SAD I mean VERY SAD. UoM never had bag carriers as VCs before

I disagree with the statement above. These appointments are legally made and have no connection to Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe or any allegations of corruption. It's important to recognize that these decisions are lawful and separate from any political affiliations.

Even higher education in Sri Lanka has, literally as well as metaphorically, gone to the dogs. A classic example is the appointment of the Chancellor of the highly prestigious University of Colombo, done several years ago.

As the former President of the Peradeniya University Alumni Association, Victoria,Australia, I know for a fact,and I have experience in working with him, as the deputy Vice Chancellor for a long time. Well-deserved appointment, and I congratulate Prof. Terrence Madhujith on his new role.
