New laws needed to face new threat of migration: MS
President Maithripala Sirisena said that the Security Council, which met recently, had discussed the importance of drafting new laws to face the growing threats posed by migration apart from implementing existing laws pertaining to emigration and immigration.
He said issues arising from migration had today became one of the key concerns faced by the country which is an island nation with a population of more than 20 million.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the Suhurupaya Administrative Complex in Battaramulla yesterday, the President said he hoped to have Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs Minister S. B. Navinna and officials of the Immigration and Emigration Department present at the next session of the Security Council to discuss the issues the country was facing with regards to migration and to come up with a proper mechanism to tackle them.
“Issues such as migration and the influx of refugees are serious concerns in the world today. The Western world is panicking. Many countries face new challenges because of war and unrest and similar issues facing them. These issues affect us too. Therefore, the ambition, generosity and contributions by everyone is needed in order to face these issues,” he said.
The Registration of Persons Department and the Immigration and Emigration Department which come under the Internal Affairs Ministry’s purview were shifted to the new administrative complex which already houses the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
