New tax will be imposed on walking aids, hearing aids: GMOA

Colombo, Dec.16 (Daily Mirror) - The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) claimed that the increase in the VAT from January will pose a serious threat to the health sector as it will be imposed even on crutches used by disabled persons.

GMOA media spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said imposing a new 18 percent tax on several items in the health sector will apply to items that have not been taxed so far, and it will cause a serious crisis.

Ambulances, raw materials used to manufacture medicine, medical equipment, high-tech medical equipment and all equipment used by disabled persons, such as walking aids and hearing aids, will be subject to the new tax from January.

"By imposing an unnecessary weight on the health sector creates issues on the benefits that should be given to patients. As we say every day, the health sector in this country will face a critical situation.

"In the end, the policies and actions of the government, which is bound to protect the livelihoods of the people, will endanger the lives of those very people," the GMOA said.

Due to the increase in taxes, more doctors will leave the country, Dr. Wijesinghe added.
