Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided not to change electricity tari for six months and to go for a revision by mid next year, it was revealed yesterday.
This was revealed in the tari revision proposal which was handed over to Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) by the CEB.
The proposal signed by CEB General Manager K. G. R. F. Comester said the decision was taken to maintain the current tari levels considering the importance of maintaining the estimated
surplus.
“A surplus of Rs 2,334 million has been estimated for 2025 warranting a tari reduction of 1.02 per cent. Any variation of the estimate whether an excess or shortfall, will be accounted for the bulk supply transaction account (BSTA) and considered in the next tari revision. In the light of this and to ensure nancial and operational stability while avoiding potential risks to the reliability of power supply, CEB proposed to maintain the prevailing tari structure for the rst six months of 2025,” the CEB said.

Actually JVP/NPP is NOT an ' UNKNOWN ANGEL'.If you were Alive back in 2004 ,you should be able to remember How they AKD,,VIjitha etc used to hold 3 cabinet portfolios in CBK's Government.Made an utter mess of all those ministries and left the Government abruptly after 18 months stating they can bring " "prosperity "to Sri lanka ONLY if they have the Full Control of the Government.Next day a few People's Alliance stalwarts ( If i can remember correctly ) like GL,Susil etc held a press conference to Reveal, despite allocating extra funds to all JVP run portfolios, they still did no significant work in their ministries.Just talk and talk only. This is why Late Mr Ronald Reagan once said,If you Put communists in-charge of all the Deserts in the world ,before one year is over ,they will run out of all the Sand but nothing to show for it.

Don't give jargon and mislead the public. Did you consider all these when incease tariffs twice within a short time. Totally unfair. Public should have taken to streets when it was increased exorbitantly to cover up inefficiency of CEB

Then, will they hold any bonus to their employees during this period too? A highly inefficient and corrupt institution with monopoly in the market has started making profits because the consumers are bearing the cost of corruption, mismanagement and inefficiency. Based on such artificial profit, employees are paid huge bonuses, the cost of which is born by the consumers. The only thing which has happened is shifting the burden of this cost from tax payers to consumers. What is the government going to do for this?

Good move. Raise the funds to pay down borrowings as soon as possible. Then the consumers can have even bigger reductions. It will definitely pay off for the consumer too in the medium-long term.

Your fixed cost are the same whether the customer consumes 1 unit of electricity or 100 units. Yet you charge the customer different rates based on consumption. You also charge different rates based on residential or business as if you incur more costs to supply electricity to business. This practice is highly unethical. Small shops should not be charged business rates as they pass down the cost to the customer. In fact, in some developed countries, industrial rates are cheaper than residential rates

Ok, no price reductions for next six months.. So, CEB Union will have to explain in details to the mass the source of money for the recently requested bonus.

Shalani Saturday, 07 December 2024 07:03 PM
Will they hold the bonus to be paid to CEB employees during these 6 moths too? Any cost of mismanagement, corruption and inefficiency along with any accumulated losses of CEB will be borne by the consumers. Now the reported profits of CEB represent the unreasonable rates paid by the consumers to offset all of CEB losses and inefficiencies. Based on this artificially created losses, they are reporting profits and these are used to justify huge bonuses paid to employees. The only thing which has happened is shifting of the cost of CEB inefficiencies from tax payers to consumers. What's the government going to do for this?

Whatever it is please keep party politics out of it. Sound economics should govern. Having said that, the minister should appoint an independent review of CEB's operating efficiency. It should operated by an efficient management, paid fairly per national standards, but no more. NO sellouts to the private sector. Take over Adani Wind Power and invest in Solar power projects.

Everybody wants a free ride and a free meal as it seems from the comments. One has to earn what one is consuming. I like it. No free meals unless you are destitute. Be innovative. Find solutions without complaining. Glad that the left has abandoned Marxism. We all want efficient, lean, and a just government with no corruption and nepotism. They, so far, have acted like the UNP of my father's era. What a pleasant surprise. As Kennedy said "Do not ask what the Country can do for You, ask what You can do for the Country"

Previous government had cost reflective pricing. What is the current government formula? There are rains throughout the catchment areas so cost generation is low for a few months. There must be a scientific forecast of generation cost and the tariffs reduced accordingly, especially to the low consumption consumers who are most affected by the recent price hikes.

Now the NPP members will say due to some agreements with 3rd party power suppliers, we cannot reduce the price. In fact part of the fault must go to previous government energy minister kanchana w. He should have reduced the tariff before the presidential election.

Silly comments without basis. Laughable. ELectricity Reform Unit DIrector General Pubudu Niroshan’s explanation is solid and his transparency is apparent to those who understand what he said.AKD has made the right choice in appointing him, he’s very articulate, clear and talks sense. He admitted that prices can’t be reduced by 30%. Miracles are not possible but with honest, hard work sans corruption, we can expect lower prices in the future. In the meantime, those who want, can shout as much as they want People will tolerate short term pain for long term gain. The mudslingers here are unrealistic and inconsiderate. are inconsiderate and unrealistic.
