Colombo, Feb 3 (Daily Mirror) The Home Affairs Minister today announced that no special holiday has been declared for Monday (5) which is the day following the 76th Independence day.

Accordingly, the Ministry further said that all government institutions will function as usual.

Sri Lanka probably has the most public holidays in the world. An incredible loss for the economy. Especially in the current precarious economic situation, many public holidays should be abolished. The best and easiest option would be to eliminate all Poya days as public holidays. There is probably no country in which holidays that fall on a weekend or another holiday are celebrated on the next working day. This situation must also be corrected.

Sockrates, your reasoning is not correct. Our people have the worst public transport and many experience poor working conditions with no statutory limit on number of hours per week. Look at UK, they have excellent transport and laws to protect employees. We have to mature to that standard before we cut holidays and work more. Many countries give a additional day off when holiday is on weekend. Please study situation in developed countries before commenting.

Yes the public sector has many holidays. However the banks enjoys both worlds. SL has 8 statutory holidays. Ie Tamil Thai-Pongal Day National Day Day Prior to Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day May Day Day Following Vesak Full Moon Poya Day Milad-Un-Nabi (Holy Prophet’s Birthday) Christmas Day When one of these holidays falls during the weekend the Private sector and banks gets an additional holiday. I think this system is followed in other countries too. With poya holidays introduced in 1970-1977 era the holidays increased into the SL calendar. I guess during that times with additional holidays coming in the Govt should have done away with the additional holiday .. now its too late..

Agreed European, but don't forget they are highly developed economically and socially. Take for example, you don't have to wait in the office for 12 hours just to please your boss like in Sri Lanka, there are strict laws for employee harassment, firing policies are properly regulated, government pays social security when you are unemployed, health and safety are taken seriously. Look at our building contractors, they don't even give safety accessories for workers in high risk buildings. That is why we need more holidays to relax and take off the stress from exploitation.

Very sencibale decision sri lanka have far tomany holidays than any other country in the planet public sector work approx 7 months year inc all days off public poya sat/sun sick leave anual other rituals that come with...if country need to move forward some then need clever decisions need to be made

@ Sunil. I am a German who lives in Sri Lanka and I know the situations in many other developed countries. In Germany there are no additional vacation days if a public holiday falls on a weekend. This is probably also a reason why Germany is the strongest economic power in Europe and fourth in the world.

Maintain the holidays accordingly. If you need more money, do part time work like Uber driving, give tuition, masonry work, have a smaller family, change of lifestyle etc.

I listened to a lecture by a trade unionist from Germany. He said, when Germany was down on its knees after losing the 2nd world war, the unions decided to help the Govt. to revive the nation. They sacrificed their income for the nation, and when the economy became robust, they put forward their demands and they were rewarded.

Right decision. Country looses 1B LKR when there is a holidays. Public Holidays need to be halved.
