Officials responsible for prevention of damage to environment, wildlife



Irrigation minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi recently claimed that officials are responsible for the prevention of damaged to the environment and wildlife to a large extent.

Addressing an event yesterday she said that people in the districts of Galle and Matara as well as Ratnapura are threatened by floods during the rainy season and their lives are severely affected.

Accordingly, as a solution to the Galle and Matara flood problem, the Minister advised the officials to pay special attention to the implementation of the Ging-Nilwala flood control project.

Therefore, the Minister instructed the relevant officials to give priority to these two projects and implement them promptly in 2024.

In addition, the Minister instructed the officials to focus on the implementation of the Kitulwela Irrigation Project to solve the water problem of the people of the Batticaloa District and the Kumbukkan Oya Reservoir Project to solve the water problem of the Moneragala District for the year 2024.

The Minister mentioned that Rs.30 billion has been allocated to the Irrigation Department and asked the officials to quickly prepare plans by identifying the priorities in the implementation of the projects next year.
