One-third of Sri Lanka’s children suffering from malnutrition: Committee report

Colombo, September 4 (Daily Mirror) - A report presented to Parliament today revealed that one-third of Sri Lanka's children are suffering from malnutrition.

The committee was appointed to investigate into the issue of malnutrition in the country. The report was presented to the House by committee member Rohini Kaviratne today.

Gas alone is not sufficient. There should be affordable food too. SL people cannot continue like this.

In that case , work hard. Majority are doing nothing not even cleaning their own garbage. Many lands are with grown up wild grass, empty, unused, owners cannot find anyone to clear and cultivate those lands, if you find obe then he will charge Rs 4500 per day and will only work half the time. The wages he receives will be mostly spent on Alcohol, so is that not the reality. Those who are lazy receive free Aswesuma or Samudri payments and most of these go to the Bars too. Big guys do not work too. They sit in AC rooms and get monthly salary, kickbacks and spend most if the money on entertainment. When government spends money on free meals for school children, the canteen owners give them expired low quality food after pocketing out 70% of the money. Economy stalls too because of strikes and protests organised by some political parties.

According to an expert who engages with the researches of malnutrition among children, in particular the Colombo city, said most of the parents of this so called malnutrition children spend more money than a normal parent but for wrong food. Ie. for kottus, junk food, choon paan, etc. Another revelation was shocking. Some of these kids drink a glass of milk in the morning and avoiding breakfast but eat junk food during the interval. That also is a reason for this pathetic situation among school going kids.

This is a main indicator for a bleak future. After WWII destruction, first thing Japanese leaders did was was to make sure people have adequate nutrition. However with uncaring SL leaders , like to the doctor before, they will harass this group for affirming widespread malnutrition
