Online Safety Bill gazetted, enacted as law

Colombo, Feb 2 (Daily Mirror) - The controversial Online Safety Bill, which was passed in Parliament last week and was endorsed by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena yesterday, was gazetted and enacted as law.

The third reading of the bill was passed without a vote on January 24, and several amendments recommended by the Supreme Court were incorporated, though opposition MPs accused the government that the bill that was passed did not properly accommodate those recommendations.

The Asia Internet Coalition, an industry association that promotes understanding and resolution of Internet policy issues in the Asia Pacific region and works with tech giants such as Google, Meta and X, have criticised the bill, calling it “unworkable”.

Since this bill was passed in order to block leaks against the government, it now becomes an important duty for the Sri Lankan diaspora to ensure the crookish acts of the MPs are disclosed by them to Sri Lankans via other methods.

There are pros and cons to this issue. Firstly, while all of you are selfishly thinking of the political repercussions and impact this will have on your "freedom of speech" which may well be the case, consider the fact that this repression is nothing new to our so-called "democratic" republic. In fact, freedom of speech was introduced in the 1970s and then was in full throttle during the 1990s during that thug Premadasa and his honchos' rule. Journalists and government whistleblowers dragged from their homes in the dead of night never to return. And then the Rajapakses took it to a whole new level. All that aside, as a parent I am absolutely thrilled at this Bill because I know that my vulnerable children will now be protected from online predators, smut peddlers, paedophiles and other dangers that threaten family values and harmony. So, why don't we look for other ways to voice our discontent?
