Only 12 out of the 225 members of Parliament have published their assets and liabilities to date, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha de Silva told Parliament today.
Dr. de Silva highlighted that members declining to publish their assets and liabilities could be disturbing in the aftermath of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) focusing on corruption in its governance diagnostic assessment on Sri Lanka.
“In this report the IMF has said Sri Lankan institutions are corrupt from top to bottom,” he said, while adding, “The assessment says Sri Lanka has failed to achieve the desired revenue, while no considerable progress has been made in the external debt restructuring process. It has also expressed concerns on governance. In this context, the report has said the government had failed to take action to minimize corruption. This is disgraceful.”
“Sri Lanka will get the second tranche from the IMF. However, it seems doubtful whether it could secure the third tranche. Sri Lanka’s economy will fall into dangerous proportions in such a scenario,” de Silva said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
