Claiming that an Opposition MP was craving for the post of Health Minister, NPP MP Vijitha Herath said the Health Ministry had been a lucrative and highly demanding portfolio for some, as millions of rupees were involved in it.
He told Parliament that the meager funds allocated for the Health Ministry is also defrauded and misused and said that only 40 to 50 percent of the WHO allocations for the Health Ministry is actually utilized for the intended purposes.
The MP said onetime health minister Nimal Siripala De Silva had made strong appeals to get the Health Ministry in the 1990s even when the Health Ministry was facing a huge crisis due to trade union actions and other issues.
"There is a secret behind the desire to demand the Health Ministry. An Opposition MP is also craving for the Health Ministry if the no-confidence motion on Health Minister Keheliya Rambuwella is passed. We are supporting the no-confidence motion while urging for a change in the entire system of the health sector rather than a personal matter involving the Health Minister,” MP Herath said.(Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
