Colombo, July 02 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka faces a stark reality as suicides emerge as the leading cause of intentional injury-related deaths, claiming over 3,000 lives each year.

This statistic was highlighted by the Ministry of Health during the National Injury Prevention Week to be observed from July 1 to July 5, 2024.

Health officials emphasised that suicides constitute a significant public health challenge, stressing the urgent need for enhanced mental health support services, community awareness programmes, and effective suicide prevention strategies to combat this alarming trend.

After all we have 4 world religions to develop religious and spiritual development... How much money has been spent on them to boast our religious and spiritual development and yet why this high rate of suicide..what went wrong ? Economic hardship? Moral decay? Ignorance? Lack of medical and health advice? Social isolation? Lack of government support? Socio and digital information and influence? Have some classes on anger management and depression reliefs

When you read the comments full of hate, racism and insults in the paper, for example about the Western culture, LGBT community, Indians etc. it makes me think that the so-called religious mentality in Sri Lanka curtailes and frustrates people and avoid them to live the life they want. Religion and spiritual thinking should comfort and guide the people, but in Sri Lanka it is used as abuse of minorities and insulting people with different views and lifestyles. How can someone be a free spirit in Sri Lanka? When you have so much hate in yourself, you must be a very depressed and sad person.

It is an alarming situation. Unfortunately there is no proper study done to find out root causes. Television channels promoting beauty are also indirectly responsible for reducing self confidence of youth looking less attractive.
