Over Rs. 2.5 bn annual rent paid for vehicles rented by public institutions

Colombo, March 08 (Daily Mirror) - It was revealed in parliament that more than Rs. 2.5 billion is paid annually as rental for vehicles acquired by government agencies.

This was revealed by the Finance Ministry in reply to a question raised by SLPP MP Kokila Gunawardene on vehicles acquired by public institutions.

It was revealed that 4,427 vehicles have been acquired by the public institutions on rental basis and that Rs. 2,562 million is paid as annual rent for the said vehicles.

According to a question raised by MP Gunawardene on the number of running condition vehicles in public institutions, the ministry said some 69,121 vehicles are in running condition as of March 1, 2024.

That’s why SL needs a revamp of everything from Parliamentary level to any other public serving institution. The current old candidates in politics will keep on recycling this way of governance if no younger professionals are voted in every elections. Look how developed and developing countries such as Japan, Singapore and China are successfully developing by the day and having a 20 to 40 year renewal and development plan. They ensure a succession plan always.

What do you call it daylight robbery or breaking the rules because there must be rules regulations in each public institution prohibiting such activity except in an emergency where you take a taxi if necessary after getting the relevant approval (depending on the rules in each place)Waste of time having audits in such circumstances it is a law and order situation where rules are flouted with impunity Who pays if it is a govt dept because a govt dept has no income it is the the ordinary tax payer
