Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that overseas Sri Lankans played a key role in bringing former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to power in the 2019 Presidential election, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the National People's Power has been the main choice of the overseas Sri Lankans this time.
Speaking at a meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, he said overseas Sri Lankans are now campaigning for a system change and a new change for Sri Lanka and the NPP has been their choice to make that change.
He requested Sri Lankans in Sweden to come to Sri Lanka and vote for the NPP or do an online campaign to garner support for the NPP.
"Educate your family members and friends in Sri Lanka whenever they contact you over the phone," he said.
Dissanayake said overseas Sri Lankans is a crucial force in upcoming elections and requested them to support the NPP to obtain power and develop the country after obtaining power.
"Overseas Sri Lankans played a key role in bringing Gotabaya to power. Similarly, after he shattered the aspirations of the people, they created public opinion that Gotabaya must go home. The overseas Sri Lankans have now created a public notion for a system change. Their main choice is NPP today," he said.
He said no other party has been able to address overseas Sri Lankans in this manner lately.

@Dr Saman : is this just your UK neighbourhood then? What a ridiculous and desperate comment to make. End of the day, what has the NPP got to offer? Until such time as they lay their plans to improve this country and the lives of its citizens, they are no better than the Green, the Blue, and the Red before them. Amen.

Its a pity that these comments are not made after care full studies of JVP which embrace democracy 33 years ago. Further this commentator wouldn't have made this comment if she has studied the work of AKD as the minister of Agriculture and animal husbandry foe 1.5 years.Just another one point they left chandrikas government over Tsunami issue where LTTE had requested that funds for tsunami coming from over seas for north east should be sent to the LTTE organization direct and if it had allowed it may have given an impression that this country has two governments.

It is a disgrace that Sri Lankan citizens living abroad are still being denied their constitutional right to vote, regardless from which country. Most countries give their citizens abroad the opportunity to vote by postal vote.

THOUGHT SRI LANKAN'S CAN VOTE WHERE EVER THEY HAVE RELOCATED TO AROUND THE WORLD USUALLY BY REQUESTING FOR A POSTAL VOTE FROM THE EMBASSIES AND IN PERSON. I BELIEVE MAJORITY WILL DEFINITELY VOTE BY PO Monday, 29 April 2024 05:37 PM
IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE NORM THAT SRI LANKAN'S LIVING OVERSEAS ARE ENTITLED TO VOTE IN ALL ELECTIONS IN PERSON AT THE SRI LANKAN EMBASSIES AROUND THE WORLD AND OR BY CALLING UP AND REQUESTING FOR A POSTAL VOTE, ANYONE TRAVELLING ABROAD COULD ALSO REQUEST FOR A POSTAL VOTE VIA THE SRI LANKAN EMBASSY IN WHICH EVER COUNTRY THEY WILL BE IN DURING/TIME OF THE ELECTION. NOT AWARE IF THESE STANDARD PROCEDURES WHICH HAVE BEEN FOR DECADES FUNCTIONING IN THE PAST HAVE BEEN CHANGED.

Sri Lankans who live abroad do have the right to vote. But in SL it ois denied. However if one lives abroad why do you want to vote in SL as you are governed by the laws of your host country. Generally the overseas sri Lankans don't have tge ground level view of tge problems in SL feed by SL dwellers.

Before Anura Kumara asked Sri Lankans abroad to vote for the NPP, he should have made his program to save Sri Lanka, especially his economic program and his tax policy, public!!! Because apart from criticism of Ranil's policies, the NPP has only been spouting "hot air", i.e. there are no detailed statements whatsoever on these extremely important issues and how he intends to place the country's future on a solid foundation!!! People expect convincing concepts and socially just programs that make things easier and improve things in the long term!!! Trips abroad and political talks with friendly countries may have a psychological effect on the population, but they are no substitute for presidential skills and leadership abilities!!! Anura Kumara is seriously lacking in these areas and these will be particularly in demand in the future!!!

What shortsightedness of such shallow thinkers who backed the Aragalaya to be only on FB. Whether they like it or not the JVP has been decided by the larger majority of Sri Lankans to lead the country in the next phase. China , India, the EU and US all know it except for the blind lackeys in Colombo who are looking for a a few dollars more.

Give Assurance Party Principals Have Changed Sunday, 28 April 2024 06:29 PM
Lay out your plans properly. Correct us if your colleagues are giving speeches reminding how JVP operated in the past with lots of oppression and removal of any opposition. Give assurances that all outstanding corruption and murder cases are properly documented and refer to the courts for sentencing, Also, list out your potential ministerial candidates for sensitive ministries like Justice, Public security, Defence, Development, Trade and possible mergers of ministries to cut cost. You need to give assurances that the party principles have changed and no more thuggery and revenge will be enforced on anyone once elected. All wrong doings must be handled by the courts and judiciary is independent and rotation of the judiciary will be helpful too. Then, your voter base might increase especially those undecided or wanting to spoil their votes.

Are your Party Principles The Same as witness in the 80s Sunday, 28 April 2024 07:54 PM
You need to assure and the change the mindset of many people that your policies and principles have change in comparison what your party did in the 80s. Only then you can list out your economic plans to rebuild with all who wants SL to prosper. Even if you get voted in by chance and start the violence and oppression, you and your party will be in the history books similarly how Gota was chased out. So be serious and show the people how your party has evolved or allow SJB to take over.

List Out NPP’s 5 year Action Plan Sunday, 28 April 2024 10:37 PM
Good you have an open mindset. However some feel Ranil and current team is doing a good job as seen in the reviews of another DM article where he’s asking to speed up project improvements. Unless NPP can proof they are not the same party of the 80s and will not undermine the democratic process of SL, they shud do well. Come up with a 5 year action plan and show us the targets the party is aiming for.

Those of us still living in SL made a choice to live in this country, regardless of whatever difficulties that may come on the way. These "Sri Lankans" living abroad got out the first chance they. It's their choice. But, what the future should be for SL should be decided by those living in SL. These people living abroad do not have to live with the consequences of their votes. They vote and leave the next day. Those of us who chose to live in this country have to suffer the consequences of their votes.

The plan is to enforce socialist economy that they think is the only solution for all the problems the country is facing . Like most failed countries the rulers and their close comrades will enjoy the perks others has to simply be satisfied with whatever the state dictate. Never ask them anymore about their policies. They are still hanging portraits of Che Guevara Marx Lelnin in their offices and whenever they take to the streets for whatever reason exhibit big billboards with these guys pictures who's policy the world had rejected and now obsolete . It is not possible togive an economic program and tax policy as an election manifesto to come to power by parties in the opposition with loans tobe paid to IMF etc.Only the ruling Govt.can give an election manifesto how to gradually overcome these obstacles. Any new party coming to power will see the unplayable debt like you seeing your face always in front of the mirror. So all new parties should talk about stopping the day by day increase of COl. Then these poor and the poorest people will atleast believe the party as an initial step.

Most Sri Lankans (most, not all) living in western countries have gone to these countries on holiday/visit visas and illegally stayed on, so they cannot return to SL; if they do come to vote for the JVP they may not be able to go back. Isn't it strange that all these JVP supporters fled to western countries and not to Russia, China or Cuba. I am waiting for Anura sahodaraya to visit these communist countries and beg Sri Lankans in those countries to come to SL and vote for the JVP.
