Overstaying Russian couple arrested in Kandy

Kandy, Oct 27 (Daily MIrror) - A Russian couple was arrested by the Kandy Tourist Police for violating immigration laws and staying in the country without a visa.

The couple was arrested in the Hanthana area last evening (26).

The 39-year-old male and 32-year-old female Russian were handed over to the Kandy Police for further investigations.

The government allowed it to happen all these years so it is only fair that the government provide an amnesty period for them to become legal or leave. They entered the country legally which must be considered too. Making surprise arrests it will affect tourism and it is another blow to the industry and the economy.

Hear, hear! These tourists should be asked to immediately go to place which allows for visa extension. And those places need 24 hour surveillance, as otherwise bribe may be given to avoid paying full fees for visa extension. It is unfair to arrest, instead better to detain until they get visa extension, or if they refuse arrest and deport. Tourist police need to be given power to detain until tourist pays for visa extension, and if tourist refuse only then arrest to deport. However, of course as mentioned, security must be in place to prevent small bribes being taken instead of visa extensions being paid for.

We do not need to be harsh with all who overstay in this countries .. Today out of 7 billion people in the world, millions are over staying in many countries .. Consider all those people in Europe from third world counties ..many of them over stay after their visa expired some of them 20 or 25 years over stay.. illegal migration is a big issue and we should be kind enough with them to give amnesty and release and send them back asap They have come to our country and we must treat them and we should have some system to deal with it and we should be kind but make sure they don’t misuse us as well .. Doing business is not good at all .. Local people need to protect their interests..

Yes, we must not be harsh on them. No point prosecuting them, feeding them in custody at public expense. Put them in the next available flight like it happens in many other countries. Our Immigration must at the entry point, always check if the visitors hold a return ticket

If the overstaying tourists are paying for the costs for living here, and not running business, let them stay. If they were running business, fine them and if they don't pay fine, put them in prison, and then deport them. Tourists bring USD in loads and those who are not running business shouldn't be chased out for visa problem. Only if they break law local gets in trouble for.

Nothing should be done illegal in the NPP government, Tourists should not be permitted to do business, unless with investment in BOI , any person over staying should be detained and depot immediately .

The 5 comments have some good info . This is my take on it. All foreigners should get 2 weeks free landed visa . All wish to stay more than 14 days ,should show monetary funds minimum $500.00 ,Hotel or residence of stay ,Phone number and confirmed return Ticket . Overstaying the Visa $50-100 per day. Unable to pay the fine, should be Photographed , Stamped on passport , and deported . we need more tough laws like Singapore so that we have good visitors mot the bad ones coming to benefit and depriving our citizens bread n butter.

Like many other departments our immigration department is outed and corrupt as well.many of them are waiting to make money out of immigration by all means ../ They don’t have skills to develop immigration sectors at all /. Immigration is money making business like education but our immigration official are very poor in skills and talents . Each tourist bring money .:: Now many countries depends on tourism.. Spain, turkey, Egypt and many others countries are depending on them and yet we are left behind them to catch up on this so overt starting some people should not big issue

This is crazy. Knee jerk reaction in response to opposition politicians tying to justify their existence. Unless they are violating other conditions like doing business, pl. do not ruin their experience and memories. Our people do this all the time when on foreign land many claiming refugee status. Our Embassy staff are the worst violators. Make it easy for them to get the extension. One could always catch them when leaving SL. Things have been ignored all this time, sudden strict enforcement is bad. Put yourselves in their shoes.

Sri Lankans talking big game as if people are dying to come here. Remember our economy crashed because tourists didnt come here for two years during COVID. We lost USD 10 billion. We need more tourists to come here and stay here as long as possible. We need not only their USD but also their fresh ideas, energy, creativity and passion because local people dont have much of this. Its an energetically deflated people at the moment.

This is rich, coming from a country where 90% of "rata yanawa" fellows end up going to foreign countries on tourist visa and overstaying and doing jaltara work until they land a job that pays around 30 to 40000 rupees higher than here just so they can send a hundred dollars back home every month.

A small country like ours who were dependent on the russians at the initial stages consequent to the Covid are now trying to bite the hand that provided us with much foreign currency. Whilst no one can overstay their visas the immigration and emigration should be magnanimous in extending their visas instead of being harsh on them. Most of these foreigners are enthralled by the country's beauty especially hant6ana, sea beaches etc. that's why these foreigners overstay their visas. Take a leaf from some of the developed countries which rectifies the overstaying visas without killing the industry!!!!!

These guys were probably trying to avoid a forcible military draft on a war they never wanted which was designed and let loose on them by the West against their regime. Putin is not a saint, but he cant be removed by these two individuals in our country as tourists! Please consider them on humanitarian grounds just like thousands of of our own illegally overstaying citizens world over who are considered the same way by those developed countries. When Diana Gamage is allowed violate the immigration law for years just because she has a Singhalese name, why cant the authorities be more considerate for these tourists who at least spent their own money to live here unlike Diana who continues to use your money and violate our laws to live here? Lets fix this at least now!
