PAFFREL slams Govt. over machiavellian attempts to retain power

The People’s Action for Free & Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has urged the government, not to introduce any amendments that would necessitate a referendum at this time.

PAFFREL’s Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi stated that conducting a referendum amid the country's economic crisis, which would cost ten billion rupees, constitutes a financial crime.

He criticised the government for considering such amendments against a backdrop where Local Government elections have been postponed due to lack of funds.

Hettiarachchi also argued that this behaviour demonstrates the government's efforts to maintain its power rather than addressing the country's pressing issues.
