Parcel found in plane toilet proves to be gold, not a bomb

KATUNAYAKE (Daily Mirror) - Air India flight AI-272, which departed from Katunayake Airport for Chennai, India, was suspended this afternoon after a parcel with two kilograms of gold inside was found in the lavatory of the plane, airport customs said.

They said the flight was cancelled while assuming that the parcel was a bomb.

The Customs officials said the black parcel was found while the flight was on the runway for take-off at 1.35 p.m.

The security personnel had found the unclaimed black parcel in the rear lavatory of the plane during its final inspection.

The flight did not take off and returned to the airport. The passengers were disembarked, and the flight was taken to an isolated area by the officials of the bomb squad.

The parcel was checked by the bomb squad, who confirmed that it was not a bomb but a parcel containing gold.
Later, the parcel with the gold weighing two kilograms was handed over to the airport customs officials for further investigations. No arrests have been made over this incident.

Later, the plane left Katunayake airport at 4.43 p.m. for Chennai, India.
