Parliament has passed 42 new laws within 14 months: President

Colombo, March 4 (PMD) - President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that Parliament has passed 42 new laws during the past 14 months, aimed at facilitating the economic transformation of the country, the Presidential Media Division (PMD) said.

He emphasized the importance of passing an additional 62 laws to further this transformation, indicating that if not achieved in the current session, they will be reintroduced in subsequent sessions.

These statements were made during his keynote address at the "What's New" dialogue on Legal Reforms, a project initiated by the Presidential Secretariat under his guidance.

The event, held at the BMICH, aimed to engage young legal professionals and recognize the significance of their perspectives in shaping new legal reforms.

In the white man’s land they keep producing new laws all the time and stifling the freedom of the people. But the white people are so stupid they think more laws there is in the statute book the more advanced a country is. The end result is nearly 60% of the whites have seen psychiatrics with mental problems. Are we following the white countries and passing new legislations ?

How have we got suppressed by the laws? Even by writing a comment like that we are freely expressing ourselves without been suppressed. RTI and the election campaign funds laws RW got passed previously are very good laws. Likewise the Data protection laws elevates our country to a high position to do better business.

Majority of laws passed in Sri Lanka last 76 years are geared towards protecting the vested interests of a few selected bunch of people and to foster corruption and oppress the freedom of people. These 42 are no different, especially when they are concocted by a regime not representing the people.

A very ignorant comment. The recent laws that were passed even allows Law enforcement to catch private sector companies who are the biggest GIVERS of bribes. We have incidents of a dirtyharry putting a pistol in the mouth of a customs officer and getting away with a customs fraud few decades back. Such crimes will not be easy in the future.

@Keline K- we laymen don’t have the documents, funds etc to bring these guys to courts. No all corruption are bribes as some are manipulating figures and transfers of monies to offshore accounts. That’s why we need the new regime like what’s happening in Malaysia to bring up all old unresolved cases up

Hope RW will also bring a modern labour law where Employers can hire and fire like in developed countries. This will help attract foreign investments to the country. Also he should bring laws to ensure court cases are completed maximum within 10 years and later we can reduce the time frame to 4 years. We have cases going on for over 20 to 25 years.
