Parliament tea party expenses higher due to increased costs: Parliament clarifies



Colombo, January 06 (Daily Mirror)-  The expenses for the tea party hosted during the inauguration of the 10th Parliament was higher as the cost of the goods and services had gone up in the market, Parliament said while clarifying reports on expenses for the tea party hosted during the inauguration.

The Parliament's Communications Department said the cost of the preparation of food items had gone up by approximately 100 percent when compared to 2020 when the tea party was hosted during the inauguration of the ninth Parliament.

The Parliament's Communications Department said in a statement that the media had reported that Rs. 287,340 had been spent for the tea party hosted during the inauguration of the ninth parliament whereas the tea party hosted during the inauguration of the 10th Parliament had cost Rs. 339,628.

The statement added that the inauguration of the ninth Parliament was held on 20.08.2020 while the inauguration of the 10th Parliament was held on 21.11.2024.

It said the time gap between the two events is four years and that during those four years the fluctuation of the prices of goods and services had resulted in the escalation in the cost for refreshments and other expenses.

The statement added that not only Members of Parliament but diplomats, Ministry secretaries, higher state officials, invitees and officials of the Parliament staff had attended the event.
