Parliamentarians fail to understand struggles of poor

Colombo, October 16 (Daily Mirror) - None of the parliamentarians elected by the people understand the struggles of the country's innocent poor, Janasetha Peramuna Leader Ven. Battaramulle Seelarathana Thera said.

Addressing the media after inspecting the sudden floods in the Katunayaka area, the Thera said that once parliamentarians come into power, they tend to prioritise their close relations.

"No solutions have been given by the politicians for the issues of the innocent people," he said.

"Due to improper planning in construction, recent heavy rains have caused flooding in many areas of the country. People have been affected after the expressways were built. The former governments should have made arrangements to avoid disrupting people's ordinary lives when constructing expressways," he said.

Therefore, the Thera requested the current government to address the flooding issues faced by the people and provide them with relief.

The Thera also criticised the Disaster Management Centre, stating that they have never taken organised measures to resolve the flood problems faced by the people.
