Such imprisonment can only happen in an autocratic country like Sri Lanka, where the protection of some crude religions is valued more highly than freedom of speech.

This has nothing to do with any religion. It is a matter of a crude person trying to enlarge his flock by using crude methods

@Sokrates - So, according to your thinking, blasphemy must be encouraged(?) If this Pastor can't emancipate himself, how can he liberate others?

Sokrates Wednesday, 03 January 2024 12:46 PM
Blasphemy laws date back to the Middle Ages and have no place in a modern and liberal society, especially in a secular country like Sri Lanka.

A secular state claims to treat all its citizens equally regardless of religion, and claims to avoid preferential treatment for a citizen based on their religious beliefs. Similarly that citizen must respect other religious beliefs and show restraint. Otherwise there will be mayhem under the guise of freedom of speech with everyone going for the jugular.

@onlooker. If one has to show restraint, then where is room for freedom of speech?

Yes, you sound very Christian to me, like all religious people condemning other people and wishing misfortune to others who don't agree with them. Maybe hell exists after all and you will discover ( too late) that Jesus wanted us to love each other, also love pastor Jerome, the LGBT community, the atheists etc.

Mr. Soccaretes, he was imprisoned not for telling others what he believed in but rather for insulting other people's beliefs. Would a true prophet ridicule other people's beliefs?

Well said! One has every right to practice their religion as long as they do not insult other religions.

I get insulted and ridiculed every day, but I am a grown-up and not a child and don't start crying when someone tells me that I am wrong.

Athiest : Insulting and ridiculing are not traits of a decent person, but one may express one’s own view based on your faith and even engage in an exchange of views of other faiths. If someone says I am wrong he must show why. I will accept I am wrong only if I am wrong and someone has shown me why. Just capitulating is weakness of one’s own belief or faith. There is so much good in the worst of us, and so much bad in the best of us, that it ill behoves any of us to find fault with the rest of us…Adams

Onlooker: it is a VERY slippery slope when we allow the government to regulate what is deemed "insulting" or not for them to increase their power over the people. Let the public decide that and humiliate such people. The government should NOT step in.

I entirely agree with Sokrates. We are not living in Stone Age like some of the people who voice their opinion. They must grow up. There is freedom of speech. One has the right to compare and contrast. In the UK one can go to Hyde park, stand on a soap box and can say anything about any country, religion, people.

Onlooker Wednesday, 03 January 2024 03:05 PM
Yes one has the right to compare and contrast but not ridicule or disparage. A learned comparison is certainly the work of an erudite person and must be encouraged but ridiculing is the work of a miscreant.

There is a fundamental problem between how people understand the definition of freedom and democracy between societies in the West and those in the East. Firstly from a sociological point of view, fundamentally there is a difference between these two regions. Main fact is the value of traditions that are deeply enshrined in Eastern cultures compared to those in the Western cultures. Secondly there is an embedded notion in the West of Freedom that is in fact extremely flawed. This flaw is then countered through the legal structural processes which in essence contradicts the true essence of democracy that is defined by the West based leaders. So where am I going with this? - the fact is we should never compare the democratic ideals of West with the democratic ideals of Eastern democratic values. The best answer so far that relates to this subject comes from the commentaries made by Onlooker that relates to my points above.

@Sokrates, @A, @Christian - So, we do not need doctors, engineers, teachers and other professionals. Go on praying. Then the God will give you everything. Let the public decide who is in the Middle Ages.

most braindead comment ive read. where does it say that freedom of speech is entangled with de-intellectualization? stop grasping at strawmen and throwing a temper tantrum whenever your religion gets "insulted" and trying to go on witch hunts and playing RIGHT into the dividing tactic that governments use to win elections. I dont even like Jerome since he is a faker but butthurt people annoy me even more.

@Warren I was reading your comments which only shows you are carnal minded. Faith is all about things hoped for the evidence of which cannot be seen. We see today a repitition of history when the Lord Jesus was on this earth he was the only person among all prophets who raised people from the dead and cured many sicknesses. In spite of all this the people of that time after seeing all these wonders when he was crucified the question was if you had done miracles in the past why can't you save yourself. To understand his mission you need to have faith and be humble. Let 2024 be a year of enlightenment.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its literally elections gimmicks. I dont really like this guy but this is basic dividing and polarizing society to get votes for upcoming elections. And looking by this comment section, it seems like these village idiots haven't learnt anything, instead going on witch hunts whenever their religion gets "insulted". Never change. Ashamed of these people who doesn't know the meaning of secularism.
