The monthly salary of 54,000 is not practical. It is better to increase it up to 250,000. A vehicle and a limited petrol allowance should be given. These things should be practical. Stopping corruption and waste is the key to saving money.

I think it’s very good idea. That mean they won’t depend on small favors of others. At the moment , life in Colombo and suburbs is very expensive. This given amount Rs 54000.00 is not enough for even per a week. When they are paid well, bribes and corruption jump over the window. In bottom lines they are selected from the voters and they are law makers. Take Singapore as a example.

225 x 54,000 x 12 months = 145,800,000 LKR. Apart from the main ministers and any deputies - what do the rest do???? Do they contribute constructively.. A small country with so many in parliament. Good tax payers money wasted... what do all of them do... stationery and stamps ??? ... when will this country every modernise and change. They are NOT the ones doing all the hard work. It is the common man and legitimate businessmen/women keeping this country afloat...

Being an MP is not employment but coming forward for service. A reasonable Rs.54000 is enough but what is horrendous is the pension after just five years. A teledrama actress who contributed nothing at age 28 receives pension for life, may be another 50 years. An employee needs to work 20 years by which time he/she will be near 50.

These figures were always available in websites including in Wikipedia. And all previous parliamentarians we call rogues (though we voted for them as well in past) also only got these same salaries. Even the president only get 97,500. iIt's nice to see university professors, teachers and doctors who cripples the nation with trade union strikes asking for wage hikes now coming to parliament to earn very much less! A senior professor earns about 350,000 plus research allowances. Were we the voters fooled a bit?

Hopefully practical and affordable benefits will be provided to MPs. No point in masking from the public the real benefits. Because all the MPs will have to travel and attend not only the parliament sessions, but other meetings and engagements. Don't think any MP will be able to pocket out expenses for such requirements on their own.

These are allowances (perks). The Rs. 54,000 is NOT their monthly salary (i.e. allowances are in addition to their monthly MP salary).

Salary(allowance) should be increased especially if it is a full time job and family depends on the income. Should not have money worries, will be difficult to do the job properly otherwise, some can refuse the payment if they wish.

This will definitely put the corrupted politicians to rethink whether to involve in politics. Very good move by NPP,MPs need to work for people and not for themselves. MPs could be paid in relation to their current earnings but not exponentially more than average wages. NPP's move paves the way for only service oriented politicians to involve in politics.

54,000 is not logically unacceptable.we still want MPs to acquire fund funds illegally due to this low wage.Be realistic we don’t want wealth disparity between MPs and others .I think it should at least be 600,000 to 750,000 per month.

Rs 100, 000/- sounds too high. For communications e-mails should be used mostly, and most organizations and individuals do have smart phones and email accounts these days. E mail plus a supplementary allowance to complement e-mail should do. The government mus provide a common server system and ISP for all MPs as part of governments infrastructure support.

Actually a MPs salary will come to 328,000 rupees per month after all allowances are added.what im waiting to see is a statement from all JVP / NPP MPs that they will not take any of that .Afterall they promised during presidential and parlimentary campaign trails that they will work for free if elected.They say they would make politics a Service not a salary taking employment.it was just 3 months ago

The first thing is to reduce the members of parliment. For a country of our size, 120 should be more than enough. This national list should be for professional people only and not for people who contest elections. The number should reduce to around 10 or 15. All in the total should not be more than 120. Then give them a reasonable salary as per the COL. Pension should be after seving 20 years or above and eligible to get it after 60 .

Think of it this way, people: This role is like a Salesperson's role. Base salary, then incentives (which have not been disclosed) on top of that. Everyone commenting here needs to realise that we are all being fooled by this salary/perks scheme. Wake up everyone - this is the new Sri Lanka.
