Colombo, Feb 21 (Daily Mirror) - A total of 1,184,423 three-wheelers are currently registered in Sri Lanka and the Transport Ministry is to implement a pilot project to popularize the registration and use of electric vehicles as a basic activity in relation to the e-mobility policy.

With the aim of reducing environmental damage and limiting the increasing use of fuel-efficient three-wheelers, the electrification pilot project was implemented by the Transport and Highways Ministry and the Department of Motor Transport in collaboration with the United Nations Development Agency (UNDP).

A progress review meeting in this regard was held at the Ministry where stakeholders were informed.

In this project, the three-wheelers that are currently powered by fuel will be converted to electricity, and the opinions of all stakeholders were consulted and discussed about the relevant technical, operational and practical conditions.

The current juncture, when new 3-wheelers cannot be imported, should be used to introduce a program to ban these moving death traps from Sri Lanka's roads. The import of these vehicles should never be allowed again. A step-by-step plan must be developed that will result in all 3-wheelers disappearing in 10 years. Especially now that Ranil is in power, this program could become law. Ranil does not need to take into account the votes of the 3-wheel drivers, importers, dealers and the accessories industry, as he has no chance of being re-elected anyway.

We cannot discard three-wheelers as they've almost become a culture. I too was a twheel-hater but have now realized their importance especially in emergencies, and in remote areas where no other vehicle dared to go. What needs to be done is to discipline their drivers, which the police have started from this month with their project to apprehend road rule breakers.

Three wheelers are the only consolation for the poor. If these were not present how on earth can the poor transport a sick person to hospital ? Even for other short distance travel, it is not only the poor who depend on three wheelers but others too.Some idiots who own vehicles don't understand the predicament of those who don't own a vehicle ?
