Police clarify controversial arrest video in Kurunegala

Colombo, Dec 28 (Daily Mirror) - Police have addressed concerns surrounding a video circulating on social media, depicting two officers using force during the arrest of a suspect in Kurunegala.

In the video, two policemen are seen holding the suspect on the ground and securing him with a rope. One officer is seated on the suspect, while the other is tying the suspect's legs.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa clarified that the incident occurred in the Doratiyawa area of Kurunegala on December 26. The two police officers arrested the suspect on charges related to possession of drugs and suspected thefts, he said.

"The individual in the video is a drug addict who earns a daily wage by selling drugs and engaging in thefts. The officers discovered 2 grams of heroin in the suspect's possession at the time of the arrest. While attempting to control the suspect, the officers did not resort to assaulting him," the spokesman said.

Following the arrest, the suspect was remanded after being produced before court.
