Police identify 125 traffic offenders through CCTV in Colombo, warnings issued

Colombo, Jan 23 (Daily Mirror) A total of 125 motorists who violated traffic rules received warnings yesterday following the launch of a pilot project aimed at identifying offenders through the CCTV system in Colombo.

Police initiated the programme yesterday, and it will run for a week to raise awareness on the initiative among motorists.

Starting from February 01, the enforcement of laws against traffic violators will begin.

Police said 125 traffic violations were observed through CCTVs in Colombo, and warnings were issued to the owners of the vehicles as an initial step.

Offenses such as violating lane rules and failure to halt at stop signs were among those observed.

How about issuing fines to bus drivers who stop anywhere they want to pick up passengers. I have been to so many countries and never seen busses stopping anywhere other than at bus stops. This was the case in Sri Lanka until early 80s. It is high time that authorities start implementing discipline. Forget about having a solid structure without discipline.

Did you send them fines? unless you do, they do not care. How many MPs have done it? How many Lawyers have done it? How many judges have done it? How many local council members have done it Put your house in order first before you ask people.

Good Move. But according to my understanding, if anything is monitored through CCTV in public places, it must be mentioned in a notice according to the privacy laws.

This system is faulty. When a finding is made of road rules violation the investigator can find the owner of the vehicle involved before issuing the fine. Government vehicles, politicians private vehicles are likely to escape the fines as any favouritism made will not be known to the public

Jayampathi is correct. If a street or road is under video surveillance. A sign must be displayed alerting the drivers before entering that particular road. If this is not followed, the evidence may not admissible in a court. The police in this country like to ambush the driver rather than deter offenders.

I think this is another publicity stunt. On statistics, most deaths are reported outstations with no CCTV cameras. That should be your priority not Colombo, which causes obstructions and delay but not harming people to death.

Very good move. But will this rule apply to the Parliamentarians and their security vehicles who violate all the rules in the country when they are driving on our roads? They don't adhere to lane rules nor the stop signs when they are on the road.

Busses and three wheels stop any place they want most of the time just breaks no indication given for vheicles coming behind its so bloody dangerous that need to be stop ..
