Police to use drones for monitoring traffic congestion in Colombo

Colombo, Dec 03 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka Police will begin using drone cameras to monitor traffic congestion in Colombo and its surrounding suburbs.

Police spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that the operation will initially be implemented as a rehearsal project. The goal is to monitor traffic hotspots using drones and direct police officers to areas in need of intervention to alleviate congestion.

This initiative is being carried out under the instructions of the acting Inspector General of Police.

In 2021, the police launched a similar initiative with the support of the Sri Lanka Air Force, aimed at using drones to monitor traffic violations. The footage from these drones was also intended to assist in taking action against offenders.

However, the spokesman said that this time, the operation will be carried out by the Traffic Division of the Sri Lanka Police using its own equipment.

Get rid of three wheelers from Colombo. They are the biggest problem on the roads. Allowing three wheelers to roam around main roads means nothing but chaos.

Charge a Toll on all vehicles entering Colombo City. The toll charges will definitely reduce the congestion, YEAH don't forget it's a huge revenue for the CMC or any government authority.

I greatly value the initiative using contemporary technology, and it is a positive indication that SL Police is using its technological capabilities. But as a person who has been traveling daily for past 15 yrs from Nugegoda to Colombo, I have the following Concerns. Are traffic lights necessary? Nearly all of the color lights are turned off during peak traffic hours, such as morning and evening, or even around-the-clock, while police officers supervise traffic. Even last week, when it has been raining heavily, the Police officers are managing the traffic, risking their lives. In my experience over the last 15 yrs, when the color lights are not in operation, the traffic gets worse. I don't mean to point out finger to the SLP, but this is what I and majority of the public may have experienced. Even roads are deserted, I have seen color lights are operating at midnight. Even after investing millions, we still manage traffic by using human involvement. I believe this needs to be looked

High time a crack down on indiscipline driving is initiated. Make drivers observe road rules and enforce hefty fines on those who disobey. The traffic congestion will ease automatically.
