Colombo, March 18 (Daily Mirror) - While issuing a circular, the Education Ministry has directed schools to postpone their sports meets due to the prevalence of higher temperatures.

The circular was issued following the instruction of Education Ministry Secretary Ms. Wasantha Perera today, who said copies of the circular have been sent to all principals of schools.

The Metrology Department has reportedly claimed that the prevalent high temperatures will persist till April.

The health authorities were also informed about the health issues that can occur when assigning students for outdoor activities such as sports meets.

Why does this directive need to come from the education ministry? School principals are expected to have common sense. Stop spoon feeding them. Make it a permanent policy setting a maximum temperature for prolonged and endurance activities across the country. Use social media and news to inform the public of this policy so that any violation by school staff will be be addressed. No need to be going back and forth on this each time there is a heatwave.
