November 25 - Responding to social media reports criticizing the presence of top NPP members at the ABBA Tribute Show, the Mount Lavinia Hotel clarified that the dignitaries were invited guests at the concert.
The attendance of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath and Tilvin Silva made headlines as social media reports alleged that they had spent thousands of taxpayers' money to attend the concert.
In a statement, the hotel emphasised, "As a tourism-related event, we extended invitations to several dignitaries, including Honourable Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism Vijitha Herath, in recognition of their roles in supporting the industry."
The hotel further expressed pride in hosting the ABBA Show as part of its mission to bolster tourism and enhance Sri Lanka’s appeal to both local and international travellers.

The question is, what would have been said by the NPP/JVP if the same thing was done by Rajapakshas or SJP members? Looks like they are facing the same problem they created for others. What goes around comes around.

Regardless of what NPP would have said, what did you say when the previous Governments/Politicians looted the country for decades? You probably kept your mouth shut and voted them back in. No need for for your petty comments now. Give the new Politicians a chance to give this country and it's people what we have been deprived of for decades.

People really tend to think in a skewed way, far from reality. Good for them, maybe, but not for others. Let’s not forget, the Rajapaksas or SJP never did this with clean hands—it was with stolen money. Comparing that to what’s happening now is ignoring the truth. There’s a big difference between building something with ill-gotten gains and doing it transparently. The real question should be about accountability and fairness, not just tit-for-tat blame games

A Supporter of Commissioners Monday, 25 November 2024 02:07 PM
The Mount Lavinia Hotel has clarified how PM, Minister of Foreign Affairs and General Secretary of NPP were in the Tribute to ABBA show. No public funds have been used, and they have been invited by the hotel. In contrast Ministers of Mahinda and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Rajapaksa and Sirisena Governments squandered public funds and also ruined the reputation of Pearl of the Ocean. This Minister of Ranil Rajapaksa Government the next day after he was appointed Transport Minister went to the Japanese Embassy and asked how much his Commission for Light Railway Project is. Importing medicines of poor quality and Manufacturing bogus medicines led to death of patients. We can wright a book on corruption and stupid actions of those defeated politicians. Only one who did win was Raththaran. Crown Prince who was afraid to contest put his name as No 1 in the National List.

There is something uncomfortable about the NPP politicians accepting freebies to these events. People wanted them to lead a life somewhat akin to the average guy, not the life of middle classes until the ordinary folk's life is seen to be improving. It is not all about using public funds. It is about voters' perception. The other worry is that attending these free events will eventually make their minds immune and may lead to corruptions years down the line. They do need to bear in mind that the human mind that we all possess is fallible. If politicians start to live in a bubble away from the ordinary folks there is a high risk of falling into the same old ways. I am so pleased that AKD didn't attend. The other two stalwarts should also reconsider in future. Once a perception gets into the voters' mind they are no different to previous politicians, it will be hard to regain their trust.

Rathnavali Monday, 25 November 2024 07:19 PM
Mr. Supporter of Commissioners, it is pathetic for you to wrongly accuse the former President Ranil "Wickramasinghe" (not Rajapaksha) for having got a commission for the Light Railway project. He is not a man who would stoop to such levels. It is the Rajapakshas who did that. Ranil took over the Rajapaksha government but could not hold elections as the Treasury had no money even to get Diesel and gas. He had to work with Rajapaksha Cabinet since there was no one else to support him in the government but they helped him to recover the country from a financial crisis. Regarding this ABBA show, if top government representatives accept "free tickets" for which other people pay Rs. 50,000/- per person (so they say), then the giver expects reciprocation and favors are granted in time to come. That is how corruption sets in.

The biggest question is in the absence of these politicians was it not possible to bolster to enhance Sri Lanka's appeal to both local and international travellers. Hypocrites Tuesday, 26 November 2024 08:27 AM
Exactly! Rubbish to say that it benefits tourism. No tourist will come to Sri Lanka to see an ABBA tribute band. Countries like Singapore attract big stars and people travel there from other countries for those concerts. This was for the locals. Tickets ranged from 7500 to 60000. When they claim solidarity with the suffering people of the country is it correct to be at an event where the cost of the most expensive ticket can feed a small family for a month? Even if the ticket was given free. It's the hypocrisy, not only theirs, but also that of their slavish bootlicker supporters, that is so disgusting. If this had been RW or SP, these same people would have heaped criticism, citing the "baan choon" example.

I do not thing that my close friend Hon. PM, Dr. Harini, used public funds to attend a posh hotel event in Sri Lanka. Since I've known her for 15 years at OUSL, I can vouch for the fact that she benefits the Wattala orphanage's residents from the several journeys she takes each month. When she was the OUSL, she was involved in all of this. She is the most incredible and sincere person I have ever met. She She will eventually be regarded as the world's most brilliant PM.

You have missed the point here. I am not doubting all you have said. Tickets were given free, there is no doubt about it but did she come without security, in her official car etc Although these costs may be miniscule it is accepting free hospitality at such an early stage after winning a landslide is the problem. There election campaign was about the ordinary folk. The two have miscalculated massively and probably didn't anticipate the accusations of hypocrisy. AKD, I think far genuine and intelligent. It must be noted that Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sirisena and Ranil Rajapaksa were trying to set up world records and get into Guiness Book of Records as leader who has visited highest number of countries at the expense of poor people of Sri Lanka. When they travel, they also take relatives and friends in plane loads. Ranil used to take several MPs, State Ministers and Deputy Ministers as well. Harini, Vijitha and Tilvin were invited by Mount Lavinia Hotel for ABBA Tribute Show so there is no cost for their attendance. It is ridiculous and foolish to compare jokers such as Mahinda, Sirisena and Ranil Rajapaksa with NPP leaders.

But pay for the entertainment. Everyone accused the former elites for using the public money to maintain their luxurious lifestyles. Same should apply to the current elites - rather comrade elites. They should use their money for the necessities and luxuries. Using your position to get free tickets sounds like getting bribes. No one gives a dole without expecting a return. Nothing wrong in attending a musical show, provided they had bought the tickets from their personal money. Nothing wrong. but is also essential that parliamentarian and Ministers are paid their allowances. If not they may be sustained by persons with ultra motives. We wanted Ranil to perform a miracle from the start, which he did. NPP is playing musical chairs with corrupt officials and some of them are made chiefs without calling for petition. NPP has gone after Ministers , how about the corrupt officials ?. I admire AKD's simplicity and his approach and following the foot steps of Ranil as to IMF., and wish him in his endeavours. I hope NPP don't turn out to be a barking dog ditching their revolutionary policies.
