President appoints Independent Remuneration Committee to review Central Bank pay hike

Colombo, April 1 (Daily Mirror) - President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies has appointed an Independent Remuneration Committee to review the salary increase of the Central Bank.

The Committee has been appointed based on the recommendation in the report of the Committee on Public Finance (CoPF) on the salary revision of the Central Bank.

The CoPF, in its report recommended that an independent committee be appointed by the Finance Ministry to review the Central Bank salary revisions.

Sending a wrong signal on this matter. How come there are funds available for their increments but not for essentials such as repairing important medical facilities. This is where the priorities are wrong and not carried out properly. Resulting in the masses against this and previous regimes. A total revamp of policies and governance of the government needs to be implemented soonest and a professional team to run it. Now a bunch of idiots having high salaries and perks just taking orders from Ranil and implementing them. Most not fit to hold any positions in government but yet taking the ministership.

Apart from the fact that the central bank governor is incompetent, which he has already proven in a senior position under the Rajapaksa regime, the government has no right to interfere in the independence of the central bank. The wage hike is justified whether the timing is right or not.

How can the the Central Bank governor be incompetent when he has reduced inflation from over 70.6% to .06% ( from memory). Wether you agree with his remuneration or not, the man has been the most impressive performer in Sri Lanka’s post independence history. It is not the Central Bank wage rise that is the issue; it is the inadequate remuneration of the rest of the workforce that needs addressing. Let’s hope this wage increase leads to a restructuring of wages across the board.

There is blame on Central Bank union for the pay rise, but it's not them who suggest disproportionately high pay rises for Governor and Deputy governors. There are plenty enough graduates in this country who could take up the jobs of the Governor and Deputy governor.

no point of a minister of finance if he has no control of the central bank which is a state institution and the governor is supposed to be a state employee not subject to arbitrary bank decisions decided by him. Next he might decide to pay arrears of bonuses relevant to the salary increases. "O tempora O mores"

@Gabr and to few other comments that governor is doing a good job! Remember / reminder, there are over US$50 billion previous and more new loans NOT PAID up yet. There is an agreement to delay payments till end of next year. He’s able to stabilise the situation currently only coz there is some accumulation of foreign reserves in the CB. Once the loans are due for payment with interest, the situation may get back again to the crisis levels of 2022. As many are aware, the government expenditures are high due to overblown salaries, perks, maintaining a big Tri-Forces with a thick layer of high ranking personnel, interest on white elephant projects etc but revenue collection is still low. The exports, tourism dollars etc are still not enough to justify these high government expenditures. Thats why speculation to sell important lands/ infrastructures to create more funds into the CB is there. Situation is still bleak for the next decade or so.
