Colombo, Oct 1 (Daily Mirror) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed the Chairman of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Duminda Hulangamuwa and Prof. Anil Fernando of the Sri Jayawardenapura University as Senior Advisors for Economic Affairs and Finance on honorary basis.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath said the appointments, effective September 24, 2024, come with the consensus of the Cabinet of Ministers.
He said both appointments were honorary without a salary payment or other benefits.

There are many good people willing to contribute for Mother Lanka's benefit. Many with no desire for recognition or personal gain. All previously deterred by a corrupt system. Let's hope this time a new dawn has begun.

They still get their salaries from their current institutions, and those institutions bear the cost. There is no free lunch in this world my friend.

Most welcome honorary basis presidential advisors for such critical policy directions for new Govt. But who will take responsibility for the implementation

Responsible person will be taking the advice. Example Gota took advice from unprofessional and he paid the price.

That is a good example...political leaders, professionals and experts who are born in this country and educated free must have a sense of responsibility and duty consciousness and loyalty to this nation to give it something back from their own time, energy, money, skills and knowledge. YET , what happened in the previous government was to exploit it and milking from the coffer of the governments . No more that now ..show your Patrioc sentiment in practice. Thank you NPP

Very good move. On honorary basis we can certainly expect proper advise. Keep it up.

Hulangamuwa served under Gota and he is merely a chartered accountant and not an economist. The one's specialization is also accounting. NPP has already lost its way. If these people advise on economics the country will fail.

Shall we appoint Rosy Senanayake instead of these then!

True. Even Anil is just a lecturer without any practical experience. AKD should find some advisors practically good in economics.

Keep criticise. All advisers of Ranil were so efficient that they got all perks including V8s.

Duminda is a bad choice because he has displayed conflict of interest by being both Head of Audit Firm Ernst and Young and Chairman of Business Chamber. He is not independent as Auditor because he is with his clients in CCC.

This is how things move in the new government, NPP has a vision and they will go on until they realize their vision.

Always someone who judge's people's motivation by their own low standards. These men will be advisors. It is up to the government to accept or disregard that advice. Not everyone in the country is of the same ilk as Bandula, Nimal, and Weerawansa.

Gotabaya’s Go-To Guy: Duminda Hulungamuwa’s Economic Adventures! Tuesday, 01 October 2024 11:51 AM
Duminda Hulungamuwa served as an economic advisor to Gotabaya Rajapaksa during his presidency in Sri Lanka. He was involved in providing economic policy advice and support to the administration. Was told he was the architect of Tax reduction policy which benefited the top end of the town, eventually economy got crashed. President should be cautious about him taking on board. Hope for the best from him.

Curious Tuesday, 01 October 2024 04:44 PM
Was told? By whom. Gotas problem was he didnt listen to people like Hulangamuwa. He only listned to Cabral and the tax reduction was Cabrals brain child he said as much then. Dont spin vile nonsense for politics

My gut feeling is that even SJB wins the parliamentary majority, Anura will keep Finance and Treasury portfolios under him and not handover to SJB. This is to implement JVP NPP plans. Eagerly waiting to see how things pan out on future. God bless SL.

Don't dream SJB will win. They are packed with the most corrupt individuals who have to packed off home for forced retirement.

In my opinion, these honorary appointments do not work. You have to pay them and get them to work and count accountable. Otherwise these are only name sake appointments and public show. There is no free meal...

Super appointment. Many expats who are doing well in foreign countries will now step into help. I have listened to video clips some expats confirming their willingness to give $200 or varying amounts towards payment of loans due. If a suitable account is opened and publicity given, I guess there will be many who will join the band wagon

IoooSirisena Tuesday, 01 October 2024 01:40 PM
Seriously!!! Even if all SL overseas send $200 ( which won’t happen).. it will be less than a billion dollars.. and how could that cover over 50billion debt.. we have a NPP government cus of ppl like you who has no clue about economic management let alone tea shop management

Ram P Tuesday, 01 October 2024 03:02 PM
LoooSirisena, It may or may not reach one Billion. But it shows the trust placed in the new President. More over if even a small part of the dues can be paid isn't that some help given to all Sri Lankans by the Sri Lankans living overseas?

JVP came to power without 50% 1 vote as per SO CALLED DEMOCRATIC governance. They did a brutal mudslinging campaign to get fools votes. Little did they know that the same tactics will now gradually start returning to them. Days of living on handouts are over. You earn your keep or sink with others. No matter what the rich will be richer and the poor will be poorer. Mark my words Thambuthegamiyans you aint seen nothin yet !

Persons PPOINTED ON HONARY BASIS whatever their credentials may be is not great. They do not take responsibility and cannot be held accountable. At crucial moments they will not be available and can easily abscond. They should be asked to receive even a token payment.

Plus point for appointments without any perks. AKD should be careful with Anil as he has no practical experience at all just a lecturer at uni.

Perera Tuesday, 01 October 2024 02:39 PM
Were they selected through a transparent selection process as NPP had been preaching when they were in opposition? These advisors were given honorary appointments only to cover up their backdoor entry to the public service.

Mr Hulangamuwa was an economic adviser in both GR and RW govts. Way to go AKD. You should keep best talents always. Besides that, your fans wont go against such reappointments.

All these politicians are of the same ilk where they will bring their stooges who come as honorary Advisors but once they are on the saddle they will keep on galloping in any direction of their choice. All these gimmicks could be done to hoodwink the maroons but not to a society who have tasted the crookedness of politicians for the last 74 years!!!!!!

Had Ranil or Sajith got elected, by now they would have appointed all their friends and cronies as paid "advisors".

Some of the comments here are quite Misinformed. These appointments are until the elections, remember it’s a sort of a caretaker government. AKD is a true democrat and he will appoint people on merit whom he can trust to carry out NPP manifesto. That’s what the people voted him for. But he will not go full throttle until after the elections as he is a realist and quite caring. He is not an authoritarian and will follow due process. Not appointing the 3rd MP as a minister and referring MP’s benefits to a committe, swearing in ceremony, being a humble winner, all this is testament to his maturity, parliamentary experience and leadership.

Oh yes, these are for election propaganda only, once the elections are over, all JVP hard-core will be appointed.

DILAKSHAN, YOU AQRE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, TAKE NO NOTICE OF THE REGULAR COMMENTS THAT TRY TO PUT YOU DOWN, THEY ARE EITHER HUNGRY FOR ATTENTION OR FURIOUS THEIR MASTER HAS BEEN REJECTED BY THE MAJORITY. ANURA/NPP AND THEIR ECONOMIC AND LEGAL MINDS WILL GUIDE THE PRESIDENT THROUGH HIS JOURNEY TO WIN WITH A BIGGER MAJORITY AND KEEP GOING FOR THE FULL TERM OF 5 YRS, IMPLEMENTING HIS PROMISES/MANIFESTO. TWO EXCELLENT NOTIFICATIONS ONE BY A REPUTABLE SRI LANKAN, THE OTHER BY A OBVIOUSLY PROFESSIONAL HACKER GIVING ALL DETAILS OF RAJAPASKE'S ASSETS BUSINESS AND PROPERTY

Give them the elbow room to maneuver. It is not an easy task. As some have commented duo have been advisors to former Presidents. Nothing wrong if AKD is confident but he also should have a second set to moderate.

They should talk with the president about the mega bogus loans thee politicians and their cohorts got from state banks. The total is callosal. It amounts to money requires to run the whole country for nine months. Also 50 mega loans given to build new rice mill, to stop rice milling monopolies, never materialized and the receivers built houses with the loans. When the banks tried to sue the parliament blocked it

Think about it Tuesday, 01 October 2024 06:34 PM
Imagine this example. A company hired you for a particular job, based on your sales pitch knowing you had no experience or knowldge of how to do it. And then, with the company's support, you outsource the work to people who have the expertise without compensating them. Do you think they would do a good job for you? Don't you think your company was being foolish to hire you in the first place?

NPP will have to depend on Advisors / Consultants (Honorary or Non-honorary), because its lot is only Shouters. Now they are highly scoring on doing simple things like collecting Ranil's and others vehicles, cutting down some expenses etc etc

Hats off to AKD, Harini Madam and their humble Cabinet, Secretaries and Advisors. It's our duty and obligation to extend the fullest support to AKD and his Government until the General Election is conducted and won. My only worry is the so called IMF and World Bank who relentlessly come forward to offer Financial Bail-Outs. Proper scrutiny and careful implementation is a must to finalize any deal. Otherwise we all will be indebted forever for a few billion dollars. We must also tap our friendly nations including Gulf Countries for Financial Deals, Agreements and Investments etc. God Bless AKD and his Govt. to free us from Poverty and Long History of Exploitation by the so called Greedy Parties and their Politicians.
