President speaks about Articles in Constitution regarding Buddhism

President Maithripala Sirisena today affirmed that he would respect all the Articles in Constitution regarding protecting and enriching the Buddha Sasana and would fulfill his responsibilities as a Buddhist.

He made these remarks during the 95th Birth Ceremony of Mahanayaka of Ramanna Chapter Most Ven. Napane Premasiri Thero at Sri Widyasagara Temple in Kandy today.

Please protect all religions, but not extremists who interpret the religion for their own benefit in the name of religion; and recognize and give equal status to all religions. We have had enough of priority, majority etc, which was the bane of our country in the past. Please don't repeat the same mistakes.

Every individuals must practice his religion in the way they want with respect and reverence without dragging any form into political arena however constiution should mention all religions will be respected in the new constitution.

This is nonsensical to put it mildly and preposterous to be specific. How can you give preference to one religion in a multi ethnic multi religious society? What about people of other religions developing the economy, joining the police and defence services to protect the integrity of our nation? How will they feel if buddhism is the preferred religion by the state? Take a lesson from Singapore Mr. President where anyone can practice the religion of their choice as long as they don't bring it to the streets. No religion or language should be given preference but treated as equals by the state and before the law. Our leaders must have the brains and a strong spine to take correct decisions for the country without pandering to clergy to get their sins absolved.

There are schools in Colombo which gives preference to children from a specific religion. Get rid of them too and treat everyone equally.
