Presidential candidate count rises 27

Colombo, August 09 (Daily Mirror) - Three more candidates placed cash deposits for the upcoming Presidential election today (09) increasing the total number of candidates to 27.

According to the Election Commission, the candidates who placed deposits today are Priyantha Pushpakumara from the Nava Sama Samaja Party, M. Thilakarajah as an independent candidate, J. D. K. Wickramarathne from the Ape Jana Bala Party.

Accordingly, other candidates are President Ranil Wickremesinghe, former MP Sarath Keerthirathne and K.K. Piyadasa, former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Oshala Herath from ‘Abhinawa Niwahal Peramuna’, A.S.P. Liyanage of the Sri Lanka Labour Party, Sajith Premadasa of the ‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya’, P.W.S.K. Bandaranayake from ‘Jathika Sanwardhana Peramuna’, Ajantha De Zoysa from the Ruhunu Janatha Party, Siritunga Jayasuriya from the United Socialist Party, K. Ananda Kularatne, Sarath Manamendra from the Nawa Sihala Urumaya, Akmeemana Dayaratna Thera, Battaramulle Seelaratne Thera, Siripala Amarasinghe, Sarath Fonseka (Independent candidate), K.R. Krishan from the Arunalu Janata Peramuna, Pani Wijesiriwardena from Socialist Equality Party, Anthony Victor Perera, Muhammad Ilyas, Pemasiri Manage, Sidney Jayarathna and D M bandaranayake.

The Election Commission officially announced that the Presidential election will be held on September 21.

They should have fixed a bail money at rs5 million per candidate the either Election department would have earned at least more than 100 million. Which would have enabled them meet the cost.

A kind request to all prospective presidential candidates. The whole country (and you 27 candidates) knows that the tussle for this high post, is probably between 4-5 candidates. The more candidates the higher the cost. Its the tax payers hard earned moneys. So find out yourselves who these 4-5 likely candidates will be and the rest please withdraw your deposits. You will be doing the whole country a huge benefit by shedding your selfish and egoistic natures.

Wow the economy will recover automatically now that we have soo much cash deposit for a lost cause..... Guess all the main candidates must be sponsoring some of these small timers to place their deposits.... Just to break even the 100 votes these guys get..... Lowest level of politics in play...

This is absolutely ridiculous, These monkeys put down Rs 75,000 as deposit and making mockery of the system. This it self explains that SL don't have educated politicians to streamline simple process. Hardly we've intelligent politicians, no wonder SL went bankrupt. 90% MP's have not sat for GCE A/L. Period.
