India, Nov 24 (PTI) - Former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said his successor Anura Kumara Dissanayake should fully implement the “vision document” adopted with India last year.
President Dissanayake, elected to the top office in September this year, is scheduled to visit India in mid-December.
During his India trip in July 2023, then-President Wickremesinghe had signed a vision document with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outlining areas of cooperation between the two countries, especially economic partnership.
“In the vision document signed by me and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, we have set out the areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. I am of the opinion he (Dissanayake) should move forward and we should implement this vision document in its entirety,” he told PTI.
Wickremesinghe, who attended an event at the Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar school in Indore, was replying when asked what should be the areas of mutual cooperation when Dissanayake visits New Delhi next month and meets PM Modi and other Indian leaders.
The vision document adopted during Wickremesinghe’s tour emphasised on strengthening maritime, air, energy ties and people-to-people connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. It also envisaged accelerating mutual cooperation in tourism, power, trade, higher education and skill development.
Earlier, Wickremesinghe inaugurated a sports complex at the Sri Sathya Sai Vidya Vihar and later addressed the audience on the topic “Common Heritage: India and the Indian Ocean”.
Referring to India’s assistance during Sri Lanka’s unprecedented economic crisis, he said his country has benefited from this legacy during the most difficult period in its history.
Wickremesinghe, who has also served as prime minister of the island nation, thanked PM Modi and Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for the financial assistance.
Citing different examples at the school gathering, Wickremesinghe maintained India and Sri Lanka have had religious, trade, linguistic and cultural relations since ancient times.

That's a gentle advice to the present President from a seasoned politician and heeding that advice will be good for both His Excellency and for the country in general. One should keep a strong neighbor in good terms rather than souring our relationship with her. Our experiences with India in the past, both good and bad, should not be forgotten. AKD will take some time to be shrewd as RW in international relations.

Mr Wickramsinghe during the 100 days govt when yahapalanaya came your document spoke of a National Plan that will guide the govt work. After you lot came to power no discussion whatsoever of such a plan took place not even during your 2 years as president. If we are to agree with Indias plans Such agreements should be as part and parcel of Sri Lankas own long term National Plan to develop the country by 2048. Your failure to walk the talk perhaps is the reason why all of you lost the elections in 2024. India is important for us but we must have our own Plan of action. NPP manifesto in a somewhat haphazard and incomplete way is a good start for a 25 year National Plan to come into law so that it will survive political changes due to elections.

Ranil Rajapaksa has been proved that in spite of his utterances he was very much an amateur when it came to international and local politics and led this country and his political party in a disastrous path. His policies and actions were totally rejected by voters giving the leader of NPP 7/10 power in the new parliament. The new President does not have to follow RR's idiotic path.

This is not a "great vision" but an obvious simple set of matters needing co-operation between two countries - The "vision" document adopted during Wickremesinghe’s tour emphasised on strengthening maritime, air, energy ties and people-to-people connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. It also envisaged accelerating mutual cooperation in tourism, power, trade, higher education and skill development. Sure that AKD will adapt this to suit.

You were not appointed by people but by rajapakshas to mark time, till they hide the loot and ensure their personal security, you serve them with commendations but you didn’t have right to sign bilateral agreements with other countries, without people’s consent ,if you have done it ,it’s treacherous and certainly for bribes, but people still have faith with AKD ,what ever he does, country and people first, he is not a traitor like his predecessors, so he won’t follow your vision document blindly ,he does it, if it transparent and good for country only

Just dealing with IMF is not enough. Evonomic stabilisation ensures only through correct vision and power devolution. In this case NPP have to be innovative and find new avenues benificial to the people rather than following RW methods as it is with no value addition that will cause this regime's decline at the very beginning.

India did not elect AKD and the NPP to power, the people of SL did by a record margin It was also a rejection of RW and his policies. There was nothing visionary about what he did, just manipulative divisive politics with self interest in mind. Can't blame him totally, that's been the history of Sri Lankan politics, he has been a follower. And the corruption. But for the first time we are seeing a leader who sees consensual politics as the way forward, who seems to have the interests of the country at heart judging by his actions so far. If India is genuine they should be happy about the change and support the people of SrI Lanka in a sincere way which would mean among other things, having regard for a country's independence and sovereignty. The right to decide.

As a proponent of collective values, it is evident that the will of the people has decisively brought AKD to power through a significant mandate. Former President RW, having concluded his tenure, should gracefully respect the people's choice and refrain from undermining the democratic process. It is essential for the stability of governance that the new leadership is allowed to implement its policies and decisions without undue interference. Constructive contributions are welcome, but divisive political maneuvers must be set aside for the greater good of the community. RW keep your politics to yourself.

I have no doubt that AKD will not bother about a man rejected by the people. RW should know that no ruler who left office if he is decent will go to another country and pontificate on what should be done. IS RW EXPECTING THE CURRENT PRESIDENT TO CONTINUE WITH ADANI DEALS FORCED DOWN OUR THROAT WHEN US HAD INDICTED ADANI FOR FRAUD. ITS COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT NO TENDER PROCEDURE WAS FOLLOWED. ITS TODAY AN ESTABLISHED FACT THAT GREEN ENERGY WAS TO COST 3 US CENTS PER UNIT OVER A QUOTATION GIVEN BY A LOCAL COMPANY. It's no more Aiyo Srisena. It's now Aiyo Aiyo Ranil!! Mr Wickramasinghe, please learn from Mr Tilvin Silva. Having reached the pinnacle of a political career with his party winning the Presidency and a two-third plus majority in the parliament, he is getting ready to hand over his general secretary position to a younger person and retire from politics gracefully. Don't you think you should have retired from politics long ago having lost almost all elections you contested and rejected outright by the voters? Please keep quiet like a sensible person and let AKD run the country. Our people will determine his success or failure and decide his future at the appropriate time. You please retire and watch the happenings around you. Cheers.

Unlike the previous heads of state, president AKD enjoys a force of blind supporters that endorse his every action irrespective of its repurcussions. He has done a U-turn with regard to IMF agreement but his clapping clique keep mum about it. It is disheartening to see a former president with over 47 years of political experience offering unsolicited advice to the newly elected government. The people have spoken, and the new regime can more than govern and implement its mandate. While your contributions to the nation’s history are acknowledged, it is time to focus on personal endeavours or issues that truly matter to you rather than attempting to influence or undermine those entrusted with leading the country today. Let us move forward without unnecessary distractions. Thank you.
