President Maithripala Sirisena said on Saturday that he would not allow a salary increase for Members of Parliament.

“I will not allow a salary increase to Parliamentarians even by 5 cents,” he said addressing an event in Polonnaruwa.

“Do you think I am getting a huge sum of money as the President? No I am only getting 95,000 per month as the salary, whereas ministers were getting more than 400,000 each per month,” the President said.

It is equally important to have diversity in parliament to ensure voices of all are heard. Even if a MP has no GCE O/L, if strong leadership, good community service and good track record is evidenced then he/she should be allowed to enter parliament. Ranasinghe Premadasa is a good example who shone as a great leader despite him not doing higher studies. He outperformed many educated persons in sri lankan political history. Once you have quality, then you can give a decent pay hike. We don't want MPs who come to influence policy changes in order to develop their business.

What can the MPs do with a normal salary increase. They already have a good salary and they already know to manage their life, with the present rise of living expenses. They should set an example to the country by having a decent quality life, with what ever they have.

Pay is relative to the responsibilities one carry when doing work. The ministers are paid higher than the Prez because chances for corruption is higher with the ministers.
