Colombo, Jan 04 (Daily Mirror) - While denying reports that death row inmate Duminda Silva is receiving special facilities at the Prison Hospital, the Prisons Department released photographs of the ward where Silva is being treated.
Prisons Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake clarified that Silva is receiving residential treatment at Ward No. 3 of the Prison Hospital, alongside more than 50 other inmates who are also undergoing treatment.
Dissanayake also said that the Director of the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital had recommended that Silva be treated under medical supervision, based on the advice of the specialist who treated him when he was initially transferred to the prison.
The spokesman said Silva is currently under the supervision of prison doctors.
Furthermore, the Prisons Department has made a formal inquiry from the Director General of Health Services to determine whether Silva should continue to receive residential treatment at the Prison Hospital.
A medical board has been appointed to assess the situation, and the Prisons Department will take further action based on their recommendations, the spokesman said.
The Prisoner's Rights group yesterday accused the Prisons Department of providing special facilities to certain inmates in prison, including Duminda Silva.
However, Dissanayake strongly denied these claims, stating that no special facilities have been provided.
He said that two preliminary investigations and site inspections were conducted, revealing that Silva has not been given a separate toilet or any other special treatment.
