Private bus strike called off after discussions with police

Colombo, January 8 (Daily Mirror)- The discussion held today between private bus associations and the Acting Inspector General of Police regarding traffic operations conducted under the Clean Sri Lanka programme was successful, according to the private bus associations.

Addressing the media, they announced that the associations have decided not to proceed with the planned island-wide strike.

The bus associations had initially decided to launch a strike to protest against what they perceived as the police overstepping their authority and exerting unnecessary pressure on buses.

In this context, representatives of the bus associations met with Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya at Police Headquarters this morning.

Following the discussions, the bus associations decided not to proceed with the planned strike action.

It is time that bus mafia to be told that they are not the legislative council in this country. They are being advised with good will where they are doing wrong, and given space to fix the issues concerned. Gemunu is being instigated by those corrupt politicians that were losers. The public is behind the police program, and all other road users are also would like to be assured that they will be safe on the roads and not going to be intimidated by the private bus thugs. If the mafia wants to go on strike, do that and lose their licenses to operate.

If there are laws - that are in place after considering all aspects - the police need to simply implement those. No politics in that. Problem is we have gotten so used to circumventing the law with various excuses to the point we are arguing about arts and crafts on a bus instead of focusing on its primary objective - clean safe timely transport system. And yes having buses in decent shape and presentation is a mindset change - so drivers conductors will slowly begin to understand the value and reasons for discipline

Government and Police don't give into Bus Associations. They will exploit anything for their benefit and not the public interest. We who elected the government will continue to support them to break these Mafias. Buses are the deadliest vehicle on roads. They drive at high speeds breaking road rules and regulations.
