Private buses to withdraw from emission tests from January: Genumu

The Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) has decided to withdraw from emission testing from January as there is no procedure to conduct emission tests on Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses and state vehicles.

Addressing the media, LPBOA chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said emission testing on vehicles is not practical because the quality of the diesel fuel is not at an acceptable level.

He said a gazette (1295/11) notification was released in 2003 by the government, which had to be implemented in 2007. It said the sulfur content of auto diesel was reduced to 500 ppm. Earlier, the sulfur content was up to 2500 ppm.

"Most of the vehicles in the country use Euro 4 diesel. But the refined diesel from our refineries does not meet that standard. When compared to the world diesel ppm rates, it was reduced to 0.25," he said.

"Using higher sulfur rates for diesel definitely causes environmental pollution," he said.

However, it was reported that the SLTB buses and many state vehicles do not get their emission tests for their renewal licenses, Wijerathne said.

Therefore, a request letter will be sent to the Transport Ministry to remove all private bus emission tests from January or implement the same rule for SLTB buses and to provide quality diesel fuel. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
