Probe launched on hacking of websites; Govt. to take steps on data protection: Minister

Colombo, December 31 (Daily Mirror) - In the wake of several state institutions' websites being hacked during the last few days, the government has launched investigations into these matters, Cabinet spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said today.

He added that the government will also take necessary steps on data protection.

The Minister said the government had received some information regarding the hacking incidents and that special attention has been paid to the matter.

While responding to a question on the threat to national security due to hacking of websites of state institutions, he said that similar incidents had been reported in the past as well where the data system of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) was completely destroyed.

The Minister said the government will pay special attention to the matter and all relevant institutions will be tasked regarding this.

The official website of the Government Printing Department and the official YouTube channel of the Sri Lanka Police were hacked

THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY IS VITAL AND NEEDS TO BE GIVEN FUNDING TO KEEP UPTODATE WITH EQUIPMENT TO MANAGE AND DETECT THREATS WITH THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN THE JOB TO FOCUS AND DETECT HACKING AND BE ABLE TO LOCATE, IDENTIFY AND DISABLE THEM OR THE LIKES.

Don't waste time. There's nothing much to investigate as these are daily happenings everywhere. What is needed is to take measures to prevent future cyber attacks. If the govt hasn't got expertise, hire cyber security consulting companies to provide continuous protection to govt systems.
