A proposal has been made by the Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry to allocate three acres outside the Kurundi archaeological site for the purpose of building a Buddhist temple, a Hindu Kovil and for public use.
The proposal was made by the Secretary to the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs during the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Religious Affairs and Co-Existence which was held under the Chairmanship of Upul Mahendra Rajapaksha recently.
The Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Ministry has made several proposals to address issues pertaining to the Kurundi archaeological site.
The Ministry Secretary said Kurundi Rajamaha Viharaya has been identified as a Buddhist Religious place and that it belongs to all Sri Lankans.
The Director General of the Archaeological Department said 229 acres have been gazetted as the area belongs to the Kurundi archaeological site and that an expert team is preparing to conduct examinations to reaffirm the gazetted area.
The DG said the reinvestigation of the site would be carried out within six months.(Ajith Siriwardana)
