Another bunch of idiots having free education! Can’t they understand it will be a matter of few minutes their protest will be broken up. The authorities have learnt their lesson and will definitely breakup small nuisance little protest in no time. Btw, SL is a democratic country. Allow anyone to open any school of learning so long its legal and following the regulations.

These are arrogant selfish freely educated medical students. Once they graduate they will be out of the island. All the countries in the world have private institutions. Even in the UK, USA, EUROPEAN COUNTRIES, INDIA, PAKISTAN there are private medical schools. The government of Sri Lanka should be very firm and introduce private medical school.

These goons have to understand that they are studying free from tax payers money. The tax payers have the right to send their children to private medical colleges as long as long as they have the accepted basic qualifications. Thousands of children of tax payers have to go abroad spending millions simply because they missed medical college entrance by a few marks !

They simply have the privilege to study free using tax payers money but trying to deny education of same taxpayer's children. What a crime? This is nothing other than terrorism. Quality world recognised Medical colleges should be allowed. The standards are far much better than ours. It is the politicians who allow or approve low quality colleges. Also, university undergraduates enjoying free education and privileges do not have the right to object good proposals. Like the Red square massacre, similar treatment is the best choice to stop this protests as they are wasting public funds.

@Citizen - can’t the authorities set up an exam for these private medical students to take to conform with SL guidelines. Is like SL doctors migrating to Australia, Europe etc, they need to take a test and work in certain areas for a period of time. Personally, those who can afford private education will most likely to migrate and not waste time in SL.

If some one fears that standards will be low, then set the same target to all medical schools. Eliminating private schools is not the solution. May be these selfish medical students will start a campaign to set fire to themselves, like how the high caste students did in India against quota for low caste students in universities. You all can resort to that method if you want quick result.

@Private medical student abroad - You would have missed out the chance in attaining the standards required for medical students in Sri Lanka as there was an open examination to qualify to the medical stream with an equal opportunity. Because you have funds to spend you have gone abroad. Unless there is a qualifying test for admission in keeping to international standards no student could boast that he qualifies to undergo education in medicine as money is the criteria. But look at these students who have met the criteria and fighting for their rights so that half baked inferior quality doctors from private medical institutions do not encroach on facilities afforded to the pass outs from the Medical College of Sri Lanka. It is like sour grapes for the private medical students!!!!!!!!

@Terrence K: You sound like an ungrateful, bitter person. Free university education needs to come with a caveat - give back to the country and its people for a minimum mandatory term of 3 years before you even think of leaving the country. You speak of sour grapes - I call our students manipulative and ungrateful. We pay for their education. Give back before you take some more. And it's mainly the fault of all the previous governments for letting this happen.

District quota system for admission to universities must be abolished forthwith as there is absolutely no justification for it any more. There are many students who are in the more populous districts such as Colombo, Gampaha, Kurunegala, Kandy, Jaffna, Galle, Matara, etc, who have earned more marks than those who have entered from some districts on the quota system. These students are no less bright than many students in the medical schools. It is only fair that medical education is made available to them, if they wish to get it, and even willing to pay for it! It is not always the the rich who pay for education. Many parents who are teachers/government servants have either sold or mortgaged their properties to educate their children. Government must extend the loan scheme implemented for students attending private Universities to follow non medical programs, to these students as well.
