Colombo, Dec 06 (Daily Mirror) - Former chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has challenged Speaker Dr. Ashoka Ranwala to prove his degree if he had claimed so.
Deshapriya, in a Facebook post, states that the Speaker should resign if he fails to do so.
He also urged the NPP to take action if the Speaker fails to respond.

Deshapriya, you first need to answer to the allegations levelled against you by one of the members of the Election Commission, when you were chairman.

Who does this Crook think he is? During his tenure he has bent the electoral laws to suit the criminal presidents and regimes especially the Rajapaksa Mafia clan.

No need to attack Mahinda Deshapriya. If what he says is correct must check. Because the New Government accused all the previous governments and the officers as corrupt and rogues and they are above all of them. If so they should prove it. The third citizen of the country must not be subjected to any allegations. Blaming Deshapriya is not the game.

Mahinda Deshapriya is responsible for letting an incompetent person getting elected to the highest office and putting this country in a irreversible mess. Now he wants to check the qualifications of the speaker. I think he needs to be in the limelight of publicity more than anything else.

Sour grapes? Mahinda may have asked for some favours from the NPP government and when rejected, this is the way he wants to take revenge from the government by badmouthing the team. Mahinda should have brought this up before the general election but he never did....

He couldn't check the eligibility of the presidential candidate in 2019 and like an ostrich buried his head in the sand and said that is not his responsibility. Now after retirement, without staying out of making unnecessary digs, he should keep his orifice closed

Where is this so called Scientific appointments? Shipping ministry needs a secretary who has shipping knowledge not a professor if not it’s the time to leave by the time the person learns this complex shipping business. Otherwise all previous known crooks who destroyed shipping ministry will approach President and the secretary as saviours of shipping industry. Be on the guard.

Mr Deshapriya, rather than asking the Speaker to prove, why don't YOU take the initiative and disprove ? For the investment of a few stamps or a few phone calls, you can contact the relevant institutions yourself and prove beyond any doubt your claim and THEN you can present it to parliament. I am sure peoples qualifications are a matter of public record. If you don't take action, people like me can always claim you are just indulging in a bit of mudslinging

NDT is not a degree yes. The worst, most unethical, and ill-mannered group of students I have ever encountered were from the NDT course at the University of Moratuwa. They were the most frustrated individuals I have witnessed, often harassing students from other departments.

Before all of you cast doubts on the speaker hear me out!!! Moratuwa University started at Katubedda as college of technology in 1960, became a university pf Moratuwa in the mid-1960's and has been awarding a BSc (Engineering) Degree since 1970's, in addition to the NDT (which commenced earlier)!!?? Trust me as and alumni of the Moratuwa University I know for a fact!!??

Everyone knows University of Moratuwa has been awarding NDT certificates for a long time and bachelor's degrees in various fields including Chemical Engineering from late 1970s. The issue is whether this person has an NDT or a BSc in Chemical Engineering from University of Moratuwa. It is up to Dr. Ashok Ranwala to put the record straight and shut up Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya.

Gayantha Hemachandra Saturday, 07 December 2024 02:08 PM
If Mr Ranwala has obtained a bachelor degree from Moratuwa University and a doctorate from a Japanese university, he can easily show them to the public, safeguard his and his government’ s integrity. Being a Speaker of the country’ parliament is no nonsense business and he should be beyond the suspicion.

A speaker doesn't need a degree. The question is whether he the 3rd in the order of seniority has misrepresented himself? It is for him to prove it. Thats all. Similarly, if Mahinda has abused his powers or unduly benefitted, the Government should take action if they have the proof. Most of the comments are childish,

Now this "Ambalangoda Weeraya", in retirement, wants to question the Speaker about Speakers' qualifications - when he doesn't hold any position at all!!??? He must have had a Nightmare Dream!!!? Claim by the Speaker to have a degree if he doesn’t have is much more serious than commentators noted here because the business in the house is conducted by the speaker. An ordinary person can perform the role of speaker without a degree if the person got skills however claiming to have a degree when not having then being appointed is a serious offence and illegal business. Ranwala either should prove his degree or step down before it becomes bigger. We supported NPP to get the things right and if president turns a deaf ear on this my support will be turned around faster than I came to support!

Just stop blaming Deshapriya for this. It doesn’t matter if the Speaker does not have any degree; many people without degrees have accomplished remarkable things in this country. However, the real issue arises if he does not possess a degree and has falsely claimed credentials. This is particularly concerning coming from a party that professes to stand against corruption. That party must remove him if he does not have a degree and has pretended otherwise
