COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - Soon after the President's announcement to hand over the full ownership of urban homes to the respective families, people were seen celebrating their happiness.
The President said nearly 50,000 families will be granted ownership to their houses in 2024.
People in the Sirimuthu Uyana Stadium flats in Colombo 14 and the Bloemendhal Flats celebrated their joy by lighting firecrackers and beating the rabana.
While celebrating the joy, people thanked the President for his decision.
Meanwhile, during the budget speech, the President said that houses constructed under various urban development programmes have been rented to low-income families and a monthly rent of around Rs. 3,000 is obtained from these families.
"I will completely stop collecting rent from these families. Not only that, but the full ownership of these houses will be granted to those families. In 2024, nearly 50,000 families will be given ownership of these houses," the President said.
By the completion of the programme of providing land and housing rights to the people, about 70 percent of the people of this country will become the owners of the respective land and houses, the President said.
