Colombo, September1 (Daily Mirror) - Independent Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe today pledged to extend the Colombo-Katunayake expressway towards Chilaw.

"We will extend the Colombo-Katunayake expressway towards Chilaw. Accordingly, Chilaw town will be developed. We will focus on tourism and the fisheries sectors in the area," the President told a rally in Chilaw this evening.

Parties such as NPP need to come in and place some discipline and control. All the while everyone in power didn’t care much on country’s situation but more interested in building their personal nest. Once there is control and discipline, all those who had their way will find it hard to survive. Ranil suddenly on a “Over Drive” gear! Wonder how and where the money to give the huge government sector workers higher wages, extend expressways, maintain huge government expenditures especially on the politicians and security details, Huge Layers of senior officers in Tri Forces / Police etc. Might have been able to save some funds over the months by increasing taxes and getting huge undeclared loans and using it now as an incentive to vote him back into power. Opposition parties too will be able to fulfil such packages once they check the balance sheets of all funds in government coffers.

Though the pledge to extend Katunayake expressway towards Chilaw by the presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe is an election stunt, it is a timely call which none came up with this novel idea. As at now the public and private transport service from Colombo to Chilaw is in a depilated condition. To build an expressway from Katunayake to Chilaw might cost a fortune. Our government doesn't have that much of funds but seek the help from China. It is pity that President Ranil Wickremesinghe waited so long to come out with this idea. As his cronies applied maximum pressure on him to allow the import of luxury vehicles.

This is a very essential piece of infrastructure. Beyond Kattuwa the Chilaw Puttlam road reduces to a single carriage way. The road is terribly congested since the population density in this area is very high. It is wonderful to hear that one of the candidates gets it. But for the buffoon NPP supporting commentators. Why do we need roads? People can get about on bicycles and bring back the bullock carts. Look to North Korea and Cuba for inspiration.
