President Ranil Wickremesinghe slammed the Western media for their attitude towards Sri Lanka and rejected an international inquiry into the Easter Sunday blasts.
In response to questions by Germany's Duetsche Welle DW News Agency, President Wickremesinghe said that Sri Lanka will not have an international inquiry on any issues saying outright "it is out".
"Germany does not have such inquiries, UK does not have such inquiries, what international inquiries have they gone into? Why is it for Sri Lankans and Asians? You think we are second class?" Wickremesinghe said.
"You need to take this western attitude out. The western media thinks we are bad. The way we have an inquiry is by using Sri Lankan personnel. You take a piece of paper by the Cardinal and you are reading it out here. Have you spoken to the Catholic Bishop? If not then you have no right to ask me this question. You did not come here to ask me these questions. You came here to corner me," Wickremesinghe lashed out at the journalist.
"Take this Western attitude out. Sri Lanka government does not have international inquiries," the President further said. You stop it. I stop it. You have not done your homeswork properly. But instead you come here and tell me we are violating human rights. I disagree."

Our President and Ali Sabri know India is multi-billion dollar creditor. If they can say the US, Canada, UK, and the idiot five eyes countries are stupid and untrustworthy and get India to waive the massive debt. All is well. Losing 2 or 3 billion dollars revernue to sales to Five eyes is nothing compared to getting concession from India, as then China may follow and so on.

I agree with the president! He didn't ask the correct questions. He should have asked for 5 years did anyone do a fair unbiased investigation? He also should have asked why is the full report of the investigation not publicized? Why are you'll hiding part of the report? Can an independent investigation be done with the approval of the church?

He is trying to be the autocrat he is in Sri Lanka, in western countries as well. He is only exposing himself further. For four and a half years, local investigations into the Easter Sunday bombings have gone nowhere. So, belated though it is, an independent international investigation is absolutely necessary. Or else, Ranil will continue to protect his henchmen from their crimes.

Good show Mr. President. DW interviewer wanted to push you into a corner and you resisted. They should have asked all these questions from your predecessor Rajapakshas, who are responsible for the misery, bloodshed and economic chaos. You have done an enormous amount of work within one year to turn around the country. This reporter refused to acknowledge that. He has relied heavily on JVP and opposition propaganda.

Ranil is a disgrace. He is like Ali Sabry and other desperate persons hanging onto to power by stalling elections. The UNP and SLPP government is looked down upon as undemocratic and oppressive by democratic governments, and Ranil's pathetic attitude and lose temper shows the uselessness of him. Nelson Mandela was treated 3rd rate, as was Mahathma Gandi during their campaigns, but they succeeded because they are good human being - unlike Ranil and the government MPs.

Ranil Wickremesinghe's rhetoric has remarkable similarities with the nostalgic speeches of Robert Mugabe defending his slaughter of his opponents in the ZANU/ZAPU conflict when challenger by the foreign press. These 'rousing patriotic speeches' won't kid even a 6 year old these days. The public by and large are more informed now.

My first comments were written before viewing this interview. Full credit goes to the gentleman from Deutsche Welle who interviewed this pin president. Although he mentioned that he could not be cornered he was truly. Sri Lanka has to do much much more regarding human rights and accountability. This is in the backdrop of two draconian bills that are about to be presented to parliament. The democracy loving international community should do everything possible to prevent these bills being passed.

Rarely have we seen such an embarrassing interview that descends into aggression, with a president who feels pushed into a corner and loses emotional control!!! Where was the personal and political sovereignty of a man who had decades of life and political experience in a wide variety of government areas!? In my opinion, the president's strong non-verbal and verbal aggressiveness results from his feeling of inferiority, he speaks of second-class status and the arrogance of the West, and as a result he constantly sees himself in a defensive position that he cannot adequately fill in terms of content!!! On the other hand, despite all the insistence and prodding through the interviewer's questions, his way of conducting the conversation did not do justice to the significance that the interview could have had, especially in Sri Lanka!

What an embarrassing interview and that by supposedly a so called "learned" Politician and President of a Country. He accuses the correspondent of shouting, when he himself is doing that. He used the word "second class" when the correspondent did not use that word on him, thus justifying himself that he is second class. He is accusing the correspondent of everything he can hammer and even not letting him ask the questions whereas he only needs to technically answer the questions appropriately. This interview says it all about the low standard of this country. What a pity and calamity.

Arrogancy and bulldozing will only bring negatives to the country. Even saying NO to an International Probe we need to be humble instead of getting heated up as a Statesman and have the talent to state our points not to a great relief but applause for those watching this programme. When an interview takes place with an International representative of the media, articulation will definitely bring positive results instead of questioning whether we are 2nd class citizens (irrelevant) since we are awaiting the IMF release of tranches and our style in briefing media whether locally or internationally should be in a calm pleasant environment. !!!!!!!!

Why is RW going on the defensive. Answer the question plain and simple. The fact that he reacted was an indicator that he was trying to cover for his buddies. I agree with DW that he was paying lip service. RW says that the west think "we are bad" - well there is nothing to think. It is blatantly obvious. RW is globetrotting while people are still suffering. For an educated man - he does NOT know how to conduct himself in an interview. Shameful. They don't want international interference because of what it might unveil. It is the powers in parliament that have ruined this country and if the buck starts and stop with them - then it is utterly disgraceful and those families who lost loved ones will never get the closure they deserve nor will the actual killers be punished

I cannot remember a head of state who has become this much imbarassed, irritated and impatient like this in an interview. A truly mature and experienced statesman should have listened carefully to the questions directed at him and given more informative, logical and well-supported answers rather than behaving in an unprofessional and uncontrolled manner. Apparently he was trying to avoid the questions by being disruptive and aggressive as he didn't seem to be comfortable and confident to defend himself with justifiable answers. Even the heads of very powerful autocracies like Mr. Putin and Mr. Xi tend to demonstrate strong and remarkable self-control in defending themselves in front of the media. Willingness to accept diversity in views is a major prerequisite to a system of good governance based on true democracy and in its absence the rulers will be left with their only (prefered) dispotic recourse, which is nothing except stifling dissent reflective of poor statesmanship.
