It is the worst decision ever. He must have continued to restore the UNP like the economy (as he says though we don't accept) if he is so smart unlike any other. It is contradictory to one another in every sense.

He could have done many years ago before bringing UNP to the bottom. Give the leadership to SAJITH. Sajith should not accommodate the Pohottuwa group, Harin and Manusha whe attacked him very strongly at every available opportunity

Good example that Nothing Is Permanent In Life! One moment RW was high, arrogant and manipulating. Now, mouth zip and keeping a low profile.

Sir! There is no UNP- to contest from. You are permanently retired. You can watch how the younger generation think differently in the new world order.- Of course until they too become corrupt. Hope it will not happen.

UNP must have a complete overhaul and bring Sajith as Leader, Ruwan and Eran as Deputy and Harsha as Secretary and Vasantha Senanayake as Deputy Secretary. That will and only be the correct UNP again.

Sunil Tuesday, 24 September 2024 02:02 PM
No family members please. .Merit and mot family connections should be criteria for selection. You are old fashioned belonging to 1940. According to what you say, if you are a Senanayake or Wijewardena, you are entitled to a top position in party. This is nonsense.A Senanayake or Wijewardena must first prove they can do the job.

In my opinion your a very crafty politician cum leader but unfortunately you over cooked it at times, in fact like MR a word called "greed" got into you'll head! You should have not contested this time at least you should've gracefully step down... anyhow for a few lessons need to be taught the hard way....All the best sir and thank you

"RW will not contest elections". Does it mean he will enter through the national list? Hope NOT. It's honourable and statesmanlike for him to follow past leaders of other countries (including CB of ours) and retire peacefully. It's also sensible for the younger generation to take over in the interest of the party and the country. Please do not underestimate the younger generation. Look at AKD. He was able to multiply his vote base by more than 10 times from less than 4% to more than 40%. RW's retirement may also create an opportunity for SJB to re-merge with UNP. He can spend his time writing his memoir!

Lol. Last time also he waited a few months and came through the national list. Never trust this power hungry ghost. Hope he dies soon. Destroyed the grand old party without giving the leadership to next potential candidate after loosing two presidential elections upto 2005. Now talking rubbish after aligning with rajapaksha thieves.

The greatest president in Sri Lankan history Tuesday, 24 September 2024 01:11 PM
The end of an era in Sri Lankan politics. The people of this nation do not understand the value of Hon Ranil Wickremasinghe. A man with courage, knowledge, wisdom and vision. But Sri Lankans do not have the maturity to realise this. This man liberated our country in 2022 when others evaded assuming the responsibility of doing so. People were dying in queues. 13 hours of power cuts. Hospitals without supplies. No FOREX to pay for imports. This great man steered the economy from the crisis in just two years. He did the impossible. Greece took 11 years to recover from its economic turmoil. Dear Sir, I am writing this with a heavy heart. This is the only appreciation I can make. As you said, your rightful place in Sri Lankan history will be determined in the future. We are such an ungrateful and unfortunate nation. People of this country will come on their knees to you in months to come begging to liberate the economy again. May the noble triple gems bless you, Sir.

Retd. Librarian settled abroad Tuesday, 24 September 2024 02:46 PM
You must have born recently. In 1981, RW with Cyril Mathew, Gamini Dissanayake went to Jaffna, got down a bus load of thugs from South and burnt the world famous Jaffna library. While the library was being burnt, these people were in the Jaffna Rest house enjoying the scene of the burning 250 yards away, sipping drinks and smoking. Further they got the Jaffna MP V Rajeswaran’s house, the new Jaffna market, the large Poopalasingham book depot burnt down. That was his mindset. A very low grade type from Royal College Colombo. What’s goes around comes around. His house with books burnt down during ‘Aragalaya’ period. Ask your parents about past history. History cannot be erased. The wailing of the Tamil community continues.

Mr Wickramasinghe, You need to get down from your high horse and meet people at grass root level and within the public service and the tri forces to understand why they all voted against you. In your mind you may think they are not smart enough to have a leader like you (because you have such a high ego) but if you knew that either your campaign and communication should have been to cater to these people or else you should have abstained from contesting. While you have done a lot of good things for the country such as press freedom, right to information, data protection, campaign funding etc you have always failed as a campaign strategist and as a leader for the UNP. You are never too old to learn. Good that yo are not contesting.

Now people saying no point talking about Ranil.

Having tried but he could never win. He was unsure of himself he never contested for top spot. He put Srima, then SF, then Sira and then Sajith for each Prez election. Last election he had to contest alone but got only a NL slot which illegally he got, as defeated candidates are not for the NL. But when he got the chance to get there through slippery alleyways he accepted.

Need More Younger Professionals Tuesday, 24 September 2024 01:28 PM
Most of the UNP politicians come from the elite population of Sri Lanka and are elderly. The citizens are comfortable with middle class politicians as long they are educated. As mention by some, this is a new era with a younger generation wants civilised discussion in parliament and not the unruly ones currently in UNP. Their mindset is still on “manual mode”. SL needs politicians familiar with AI and so on.

Krish Tuesday, 24 September 2024 01:32 PM
If Rw didn't took in pohottuwo. And abandoned the old UNP goons. He should have been the most favored candidate. He simply didn't listen to the repeated crys for change in political culture. Otherwise his policies on economic recovery is more or less sound. Even though it lacked a plan to improve exports. But that goes for every candidate.

It is too late, he should have taken this discussion in the last presidential election, he ruined his party and end of the day he had to contest under independent symbol. He should guided the younger politicians to develop next generation of quality politicians. Instead of being greedy and thinking low on others.

Obviously. Is there any alternative after not winning even from Colombo in the last Parliament election and coming 3rd despite all the false promises. I had much respect when you vacated Temple Trees when Mrs CK won elections. Since the days of MR clan when you stayed in the comforts provided by them and took the record of the longest serving opposition leader ( probably your unbreakable legacy to be remembered) you have let us all down MrRW.

Don’t hang around as an MP like greedy MR and MS and retire with disgrace. CKB could have gone to the Parliament as an MO but she has given the highest dignity to the Presidency and so please be like her!

RW will not contest, but not retired. But he has to be active in Politics to avoid Bond matter rising again from the hot ashes. Could he re- establish his damaged " Mr. Clean " image. The person who seriously damaged his image is none other than the former Prime Minister Dinesh from the proud Boralugoda Sinha Clan. Now Both Ranil and Dinesh are suffering from Political Amnesia may be due to their age.

He will be reminded in the history of our nation as the leader who has taken out the country from the economic crisis that resulted to bankruptcy of our nation, many hardships to the peoples, ques for everything and price hike. Sir, you are extraordinarily smart and foresee way into the future than any of us. Why couldn't you have been a hero, instead of a villain? We've been looking up to you, year after year. You have always broken up parties, organisations and hopes. You could have used your gifts to build up our country, with everyone reaping the benefits. Whether you were in the shadows or in the open, it's always the same, only your elitists earned billions. Only you could've made Sri Lanka surpass Singapore and we would've held you as our president for life. No more

The country has lost a great statesman. People have always misunderstood Ranil going by the misinformation carried against him by media,, especially tv and social media. That happened in USA when Trump got elected. Over here, when Gota got elected. During this Presidential election, both Sajith and Anura had 2 years of campaigning with media backing them to the hilt. Media hijacks democracy! When Truth raises its head, it will be too late!

Because the stupid system does not retire you, we told you ahead of prez elections that we shall retire you @ the elections. We just did that. We dare you to come again and see the results @ the general elections if you so wish! My personal advice is : enough is enough. Having lead the central bank bond scam and hiding its masterminds, protecting swindler rajapassas, leading the country's bankruptcy by doubling country's loans in 2015 obtaining sovereign bonds @ exhorbitant interest rates etc. we voters are quite convinced that you need a long overdue retirement. (Dont forget that your name is prominent in the list of perpetrators of crimes @ Batalands, burning of Jaffna library, rigging of 1982 Development Council elections etc. I believe that I justify my saying "enough is enough"). Good luck!!
