Civic rights of former MP Ranjan Ramanayake is expected to be restored soon as he was summoned by the President’s office yesterday with the relevant documents.

Ramanayake who spoke to journalists after his visit to the President’s office said he was asked to bring some documents yesterday. “I approached the NPP leaders and they heeded to my request for the restoring of my civic rights. I also spoke to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake over the phone,” he told journalists.

“I was barred from contesting elections and lost the right to vote. I received a poll card enabling me to vote at the Presidential election. However, I could not vote as I was out of the country,” he added.

Asked whether he would contest the General Election from NPP if his civic rights are restored, Ramanayake said it is too early to say anything about it.

Hope this be the 1st and last where this pardoning business should stop. Is the judiciary doing the right thing? Reminds senior Lady had to go through all sling and hardship (by parliament members) while doing her job and finally with change of govt was luckily released.

Restoring his civic rights is good. However, Mr. Ramanayake, though highly popular is a controversial figure. Hope people still remember his habit of recording very personal telephone conversations which got many people into trouble including Ms. Hirunika Premachandra. The NPP should never take him into their movement. He will definitely be a liability.

Please don’t take him in. Will have endless dramas! We need young, energetic professionals to move the country forward. Can’t have any distractions of the past not related to nation building. There are so many younger leaders who will need to be utilised for a minimum of 20years at a stretch. Too many issues which needs to be addressed especially in medical, transportation, housing, employment etc.

We have no objection for the restoration of his civic rights. But he himself has to shut his mouth as far as possible Further he is not a corrupted politician whilst comparing certain parliamentarians. Besides he should respect the judicial proceedings. However he should not be allowed to contest for the upcoming general election under the symbol of compass. His contest may lead to make the NPP election campaign chaotic

Once a lone voice for the commoner, is now shut up. All admired you., but we would have admired you much more if you could have not obtained conditional Presidential Pardon. You should have waited in the Jail and walked out as a real Hero. Unfortunately you have become a zero due to the conditional pardon.
