Ravi responds to Chinese envoy

Responding to Chinese Ambassador Yi Xianliang, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake yesterday said he had every right to talk on behalf of Sri Lanka as a sovereign country.

Likewise, he said the Ambassador also had the same right to talk on behalf of his country. The Ambassador, at a recent media conference, said he asked Mr. Karunanayake as to why another loan was sought if the Chinese loans were expensive.

The Minister said if the rate was only two per cent as the Ambassador said, he was prepared to show how it had been higher than that.(Kelum Bandara)

It's OK Ravi. We all know now that you and your government cannot get anything done. China has already implemented proven solutions in this country for infrastructure improvement. You had talks with India and westerns countries and bragged that SL will get loans running in to billions. What happened to those plans? Why talk to China now? We know that your motive was different as you didn’t want to pick China as the “go to” place because Mahinda is more closer to them than your bunch.

I think minister must read the history before make any stupid comment.Before the election they uttered to stop the port city project.I feel he is an infant when it comes to the international politics.The poor diplomacy and the very primitive and uncivilized way of resolving issues of the new government caused many internal and international issues that would remain thousands year creating thousands of complicated issues.This nation is being headed somewhere we never expected.This government is biting the hands that helped us.The consequences of this poor behavior would be more serious than we simply think.

The Chinese only help if they can get paid and the dice is loaded in their favour. I have not come across any occasion where the Chinese help in natural disasters. How much help did they give when the Tsunami struck. They are known to help despotic leaders to unload their junk like power plants at massive cost.

If you can get international loans at 2% p.a., it is a big, big bonus. Why not you discuss with Mr. Ambassador and find a way to get more funds for SL’s development projects. If you read a bit of international finance news, you can see the dire finance situations of countries such as US, UK etc. They all talk big with empty pockets. Do not play politics with development, because it will only affect the poor citizens of SL, not rich politicians like you and your colleagues. Many Thanks!
