Recall retired doctors: Vajira

Retired doctors should be recalled immediately to work in hospitals where there are a large number of vacancies due to migration, a government MP told Parliament.

Government MP Vajira Abeywardene who was speaking during the debate on the no-confidence motion said doctors who have retired should be recalled immediately to work in hospitals such as Karapitiya in Galle where there are a large number of vacancies.

“Around 15 specialists and 30 other doctors who were attached to the Karapitiya Hospital have migrated recently thus creating a large number of vacancies. There should be a solution to this issue and therefore retired doctors should be recalled immediately,“ he said.

“Taking political mileage out of the situation will not serve any purpose,” the MP added.

Also, the MP said no-confidence motions in Sri Lanka and in Asia have not served any purpose to any nation. He said 48 no confidence motions have been brought against various governments and ministers in Sri Lanka since 1949 and all these have been defeated.

None of the no confidence motions have been approved in Sri Lanka's political history. The situation has been the same in Hong Kong and India. The best thing which can be done with regard to no confidence motion against Minister Keheliya Rambukwella is suspending the debate without taking a vote. The advantage of no confidence motion debates are that they can be turned into useful discussions,” MP Abeywardene also said. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
