Remove trees at risk of falling on roads: Minister

State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon has instructed the relevant officials to take immediate measures to prevent any damages and to remove the trees on both sides of the roads that are at risk of falling.

Responding to an incident of a tree falling on a bus in Kollupitiya this morning, the Minister said that necessary measures will be taken in coordination with the officials of the Environment Authority, Road Development Authority and relevant local authorities to immediately inspect large trees that are at risk of falling on the sides of the roads due to the current rainy weather.

Instructions have been given to the officials of the Disaster Management Centre and the National Building Research Organization by the State Minster to remove everything that may pose any threats to the public.

Several trees have been falling for the last few days due to the adverse weather and five people were killed in the latest tragedy in Kollupitiya today after a tree fell on a moving passenger bus.(DSB)

They the CMC can plant more deep rooted trees and maintain them. The problem here is no one knows the meaning of maintenace and it is not in their vocabulary. Only politicians care about their own maintenance.

A disaster has to strike for you fools to take action. Most of those old trees are slanting dangerously and nobody seems to have known or noticed!!!!!!!! They are like the aged parliamentarians, so old and unable to stand straight, waiting until someone uproots them. Only in Sri Lanka of course!

Solution is regular monitoring can't just go out there and cut down trees in danger of falling as the headlines seem to suggest.Need to plan, need educated people specialists in the field involved, and others to regularly monitor, need to establisn rules that agencies should follow, example those carrying out roadworks, to ensure their work does not affect the health of the tree. Prevention is the key, planning ahead and regular monitoring the solution
