Parliament, Dec. 5 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that the increase in the Value Added Tax (VAT) will apply to all goods, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said today a request has been made to exempt exercise books and stationery items from VAT.

He told Parliament that according to the Finance Ministry, the VAT increase will apply to all kinds of goods including goods that were not subject to the VAT earlier.

The Minister said he has requested the Finance Ministry officials to take steps to exempt exercise books and stationery items from VAT.

"The debate on the VAT Amendment Bill is to be taken up this Sunday. We can clear our doubts on the application of the VAT during the debate," he said while responding to a question by Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma.
