Colombo, January 10 (Daily Mirror) - Over 100 children have been diagnosed with diabetes, raising serious concerns over the rising rates of the condition among younger populations.
This surge has prompted health experts to closely examine the factors contributing to the increasing prevalence of diabetes in children.
Dr. Deepal Perera, Consultant Paediatrician at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, told the media that the decline in birth rates will impact education, healthcare and the workforce, leading to significant demographic changes.
He said that there is an increase in the number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Meanwhile, the number of annual births has significantly decreased over the past decade. In 2013, there were 350,000 births, but by 2023, this number had dropped to 250,000, with a further decline expected in 2024, with projections showing only 228,000 births.
However, despite the decline to 228,000 births, hospitals are seeing a rising number of children being admitted due to various health conditions.
Futhuremore, as the situation progresses, healthcare professionals are advising parents to closely monitor their children's health and consult medical experts when necessary.
